Position Overview
The Linear and Non-Linear Optics (LNO) Section within CERN's Accelerator and Beam Physics (ABP) Group seeks a Software Developer to join the Optics Measurement and Correction (OMC) team. This role is central to the preparation and operation of the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). The appointed professional will be responsible for creating and maintaining the software infrastructure that enables precise beam-optics measurements and corrections. This work directly supports the commissioning procedures and the overall high-performance objectives of the HL-LHC, thereby contributing to its groundbreaking physics programme.
The successful candidate will become part of a specialized team focused on the robustness and advancement of the OMC framework. The role involves close collaboration with accelerator physicists and operators, translating complex measurement requirements into reliable software solutions. The position operates within a dynamic, international environment that values innovation, precision, and collaborative problem-solving.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain and evolve the core OMC framework and its associated toolset, ensuring its stability and performance throughout LHC commissioning and operational phases.
- Investigate and implement software solutions that enhance the efficiency and capability of optics measurement and correction processes for the LHC.
- Modernize accelerator model creation and correction algorithms to use new simulation tools and methodologies.
- Research and implement automation for critical measurement and analysis workflows, deploying solutions where feasible to increase throughput and reduce manual effort.
- Design and develop new Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) and analysis tools specifically for deployment in the CERN Control Centre during optics commissioning campaigns.
- Actively participate in the execution and analysis of optics measurements within CERN accelerators, providing software support and contributing to physics-driven improvements.
Professional Profile and Skills
Candidates must possess a solid educational and professional background in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline. A strong command of software development principles is essential, with proven expertise in Python being a mandatory requirement.
- Demonstrated software development experience, with a strong focus on Python.
- Practical experience in GUI development for complex systems.
- The ability to test, diagnose, and optimize existing software applications to improve performance and reliability.
- A structured and organized approach to work, with strong prioritization skills necessary to meet strict project timelines.
- Excellent teamwork and communication abilities, facilitating effective collaboration with physicists and engineers.
- A genuine interest in developing and maintaining software solutions for applied physics, particularly within the specialized field of accelerator physics.
- Professional proficiency in either English or French, with a demonstrated commitment to learning the other language.
Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for this position, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
- Hold a professional background in Physics, Software Engineering, or a related field. Candidates must satisfy one of the following conditions:
- Hold a Master's degree and possess 2 to 6 years of professional experience post-graduation.
- Hold a PhD with no more than 3 years of professional experience post-graduation.
- Never have held a CERN fellow or graduate contract in the past.

Compensation and Benefits
- A monthly gross salary ranging from 6372 to 7004 Swiss Francs, tax-free, determined by academic qualifications and experience.
