About the role
Geodetic Metrology Position: Gravity Field and Alignment Support for Future Projects
The Geodetic Metrology Group (BE-GM) delivers foundational metrology and alignment services for CERN's accelerator components, beam lines, and experiments. The group ensures precise geodetic reference systems and gravity field modelling. The Future Projects division of this group is responsible for establishing the technical groundwork of upcoming facilities through dedicated studies, simulations, and prototyping.
This specific position contributes directly to the Future Circular Collider (FCC) studies. The role focuses on developing high-fidelity gravity field models for the 91-kilometre tunnel infrastructure. It also provides essential support for the sub-millimetric alignment of complex accelerator components and detectors. Collaboration with the Swiss partner, Swisstopo, is a central element of this position, specifically regarding the computation of the quasi-geoid model necessary for Switzerland's New Height System.
Key Responsibilities
The incumbent will be tasked with the complete lifecycle of geodetic data processing and modelling. This involves computing and validating a high-accuracy quasi-geoid model that spans both the FCC area and Switzerland. A significant portion of the work will explore novel approaches for modelling equipotential surfaces within the unique constraints of tunnel environments.
The position requires active participation in demanding field observation campaigns. These campaigns will gather critical gravity, GNSS, leveling, and astro-geodetic data. The primary goal of these field activities is to fill existing data voids and to rigorously validate the computed models.
also, the role involves substantial software development. The successful candidate will create a dedicated gravity field modelling software package. This will be achieved by integrating established tools with new, project-specific algorithms and features. The position also carries team supervision duties, requiring the guidance of junior team members.
Position Requirements
Candidates must possess a strong foundational knowledge in physical geodesy and the theory of gravity fields. A demonstrable background in regional gravity field modelling is essential. Experience with established software packages such as GRAVSOFT, GROOPS, KTH, or SHGEO is a significant asset.
Technical proficiency is required in object-oriented programming. Candidates should demonstrate competence in at least one language, such as Python or C++. Exceptional organisational abilities, communication skills, and a strong sense of responsibility are mandatory. The role demands the capacity to function effectively within a team-oriented research and development environment.
Eligibility and Conditions
Only candidates who are citizens of CERN Member or Associate Member States are eligible to apply. A valid national driving licence is mandatory. The position requires a commitment to flexibility, including the necessity to work during nights, Sundays, and official holidays to meet the operational needs of the Organization.
Compensation and Benefits
The role offers a competitive monthly stipend, estimated between 6372 and 7004 Swiss Francs, received tax-free. This is complemented by 30 days of paid annual leave, plus an additional two weeks for seasonal closure. Comprehensive health insurance coverage is provided for the employee, their spouse, and their children, along with membership in the CERN Pension Fund. The package includes family, child, and infant monthly allowances, a relocation grant covering installation and travel expenses, and the potential for contract extension up to 36 months.
