About the role
Optimization Specialist for Ion Beam Systems
This role is dedicated to advancing beam optimization and machine learning capabilities within CERN's ion accelerator infrastructure. The primary mission is to convert specialized optimization strategies and machine learning research into robust operational tools. The goal is to directly improve beam performance and enable high-intensity operational regimes.
Key Responsibilities
Your daily work will focus on transforming data into actionable improvements for accelerator performance. You will design and implement software solutions that automate critical accelerator functions. This includes creating procedures for setup, tuning, and continuous monitoring of beam parameters.
You will investigate operational and instrumentation records to detect inefficiencies and identify opportunities for enhancing beam quality. A core part of the role involves developing, testing, and validating machine learning applications within live operational settings. You will work closely with accelerator physicists, control system engineers, and operators to ensure technical solutions align with real-world requirements.
The position requires active participation in beam commissioning campaigns and performance assessment initiatives. You will utilize advanced data analysis and optimization methods to support these activities. Clear documentation of all software developments, operational protocols, and study results is essential. You will also communicate progress and technical findings at internal meetings, fostering collaboration across diverse technical domains.
Required Qualifications and Skills
Success in this role requires a strong foundation in scientific computing and data analysis. Proficiency in Python is expected, along with a solid grasp of scientific computing principles. Experience with machine learning frameworks and tools is a significant asset.
You should possess a natural interest in large-scale scientific infrastructure, including particle accelerators and related control systems. Hands-on experience with scientific simulations or experimental data analysis is necessary. Familiarity with software development best practices, particularly version control systems like Git, is required.
The ideal candidate can deconstruct complex technical challenges and formulate effective, practical solutions. Demonstrated experience working within multidisciplinary teams on academic or research projects is essential. A commitment to learning French is expected as part of your professional development.
Formal Requirements
To be considered for this position, you must be a citizen of an eligible CERN Member or Associate Member State. Your academic background must be in Applied Physics or Computer Science, or a closely related technical field.
Specific eligibility thresholds include holding a Master's degree with a minimum of two years of post-graduation professional experience, up to a maximum of six years. Alternatively, you may qualify with a PhD that has been completed no more than three years ago.
Candidates who have previously held a CERN fellowship or graduate contract are not eligible for this position. The selection process will conclude on September 8, 2026. The standard work schedule is 40 hours per week, and the position offers hybrid work flexibility. The intended start date is October 1, 2026.
Compensation and Benefits
The position offers a monthly gross salary ranging from 6372 to 7004 Swiss Francs, determined by academic qualifications. This compensation is tax-free. Additional benefits include 30 days of paid annual leave, plus two weeks of closure for the summer season.
Comprehensive health insurance is provided through CERN's coverage plan, which extends to your spouse and children. Membership in the CERN Pension Fund is also included. Depending on personal circumstances, family, child, and infant allowances may be available.
A relocation package, which may include an installation grant and travel expense coverage, is offered based on individual situations. The contract duration is 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to 36 months. On-the-job training and formal development opportunities, including language classes, are part of the professional growth package.
