What you'll do

• Lead and inspire a team of automation service engineers, fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation. You will also coordinate schedules to guarantee ongoing support across multiple production shifts.
• Ensure the high performance of automated systems through routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and necessary repairs.
• Supervise the design and installation of new automation systems, ensuring compliance with company standards and industry regulations.
• Work closely with operations, research and development, and production teams to pinpoint automation opportunities that can improve efficiency and quality.
• Maintain strong relationships with automation vendors, negotiate contracts, and manage support for equipment-related issues.
• Oversee the automation services budget, ensuring that solutions are cost-effective while maintaining system reliability.
• Ensure that all automated systems comply with industry standards and safety protocols.
• Analyze key performance indicators related to automated systems and provide actionable insights and recommendations to senior management.
• Develop training programs for team members to enhance their skills in automation technologies and troubleshooting techniques.
• Participate in cross-functional meetings to align automation strategies with overall business objectives.
• Stay updated on industry trends and emerging technologies to continuously improve automation processes.
• Prepare and present reports on automation performance and project status to stakeholders.

Requirements

• A Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Automation, or a related field is essential; a Master's degree or a Bachelor's in a scientific discipline is preferred.
• A minimum of 2 years in a leadership role, such as Lab Automation Service Engineering Manager, within a diagnostics or manufacturing setting is required.
• At least 4 years of practical experience with laboratory equipment, especially high-throughput molecular biology tools like liquid handlers.
• Comprehensive knowledge of automation systems, including robotics, PLCs, sensors, and control systems, along with hands-on experience in installation and maintenance.
• Strong customer service orientation with proven problem-solving skills and the ability to make informed decisions independently.
• Demonstrated leadership experience in developing and managing high-performing teams.
• Familiarity with compliance standards in regulated environments (e.g., FDA, ISO) and experience in a CLIA environment is preferred.
• Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences effectively.
• Proven track record of managing projects and meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Nice to have

• Preference for candidates with a solid understanding of Molecular Biology techniques, particularly those related to next-generation sequencing.
• Experience in troubleshooting complex scripts is a valuable asset.
• A background in data science or data engineering within an automated laboratory context is a plus.
• Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS) can be beneficial.

Practical notes

• This position requires an onsite presence at our Menlo Park location.
• We provide a competitive total compensation package, with a base salary range from $158,401 to $203,651 per year, and total compensation that can reach up to $274,016 annually, which includes equity options and a corporate bonus program.
