About the role
At Behaviour Interactive, the Senior Generalist Programmer position is central to our mission of advancing interactive entertainment. Located in Montreal, Quebec, this Permanent Full-Time role is dedicated to empowering our production teams through robust technical solutions. You will be responsible for architecting and implementing tooling that enhances efficiency across multiple disciplines. This includes analyzing existing internal processes to identify bottlenecks and crafting elegant technical solutions to streamline workflows. You will partner closely with designers, artists, and fellow engineers to ensure the tools you build are intuitive, scalable, and aligned with project goals. Ownership of the entire automation lifecycle, from initial requirements gathering through deployment and ongoing maintenance, is a core responsibility. You will investigate complex issues within the game engine and provide data-driven insights that influence strategic development decisions. Your work will contribute to the long-term technical health of Dead by Dayline, ensuring its infrastructure can support future innovations. Furthermore, you will mentor junior programmers by providing guidance and code reviews that foster a culture of technical excellence. Staying current with industry best practices will be essential to continuously refine the development pipeline and asset delivery.
What you'll do
Your daily contributions will have a direct impact on the efficiency and success of our development pipeline. Key responsibilities include investigating and resolving intricate technical issues specific to the Dead by Daylight game engine and its associated tools. You will design and develop high-performance automation solutions that significantly reduce manual effort and accelerate production timelines. Collaboration with cross-functional stakeholders is crucial to translate creative requirements into robust technical specifications and deliverables. Refactoring legacy code modules will be necessary to improve maintainability, readability, and overall system performance without disrupting existing functionality. Implementing scalable tooling frameworks will enable rapid iteration and support the complex needs of live-service development. Monitoring system performance metrics will help identify inefficiencies and proactively optimize resource utilization and workflow throughput. Documenting technical processes and architectural decisions ensures knowledge transfer and long-term sustainability of developed solutions. Leading proof-of-concept initiatives will evaluate new technologies and determine their viability for integration into the main production pipeline. Partnering with artists and designers will involve prototyping tools that enhance their daily workflows and eliminate repetitive manual tasks. Championing code quality standards will involve enforcing best practices and conducting thorough reviews to maintain a stable and reliable codebase. Analyzing production data will help forecast potential risks and allocate technical resources effectively to meet project milestones. Mentoring and guiding junior developers will be achieved through constructive feedback and collaborative problem-solving sessions.
Requirements
To excel in this role, specific qualifications and experiences are mandatory. Must be fluent in C++ and possess a deep understanding of software design patterns and object-oriented principles. Must have a proven track record of developing tools and systems within a game development environment using engines such as Unreal or Unity. Must demonstrate strong debugging skills to isolate and fix issues in complex, multi-threaded applications. Must be comfortable working with version control systems, specifically Git, to manage code integration and deployment pipelines. Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills to articulate technical concepts to non-technical team members. Must be able to thrive in a fast-paced, agile environment where priorities can shift quickly and adaptability is essential. Must have a strong sense of ownership and accountability for the codebase and the successful delivery of assigned projects. Must be legally authorized to work in Canada without sponsorship, as the role requires immediate start and local compliance.
Nice to have
Experience with building tools for live-service games or titles with long-term operational lifecycles is highly valued. Familiarity with the Dead by Daylight engine or a strong interest in horror game development practices is considered a plus. Experience with automated testing frameworks or performance profiling tools is also regarded as beneficial.
Practical notes
This role is based in Montreal and requires eligibility to work without sponsorship under Canadian law. Candidates must be available for immediate or near-immediate start to ensure continuity of critical tool development.
