About the role
Bandwidth is seeking an AI Engineer to join our Research and Development team in Raleigh, North Carolina. You will work within a small, agile group to build and test prototypes that integrate artificial intelligence into our global communications infrastructure.

- Research emerging AI and machine learning trends, specifically focusing on Large Language Models.
- Design and build prototypes for AI-driven features and services.
- Integrate AI models into potential future product offerings.
- Participate in a cross-functional team environment to share knowledge and contribute to a T-shaped skill set.
- Experiment with RAG, advanced prompting strategies, and agentic systems.
- Evaluate new AI tools and methodologies to keep our development cycle current.
- Use AI-powered coding assistants like Cursor and GitHub Copilot to accelerate innovation.
- Present research findings and prototype demonstrations to various stakeholders.
Requirements
- Bachelor degree in Computer Science, AI, ML, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in designing, building, and evaluating AI/ML models.
- Proficiency in Python and ML libraries such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit-learn, or Hugging Face.
- Practical experience with LLMs, including RAG and prompting techniques like Chain of Thought, Few-shot, and Zero-shot.
- Experience building applications or services using foundational LLM APIs or open-source models.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, startup-style environment.
- Must work full-time from the Raleigh, NC headquarters.
Nice to have
- Master degree or PhD in Computer Science, AI, or ML.
- Experience with LoRa fine-tuning, custom evaluation benchmarks, or LLM training.
- Knowledge of agentic systems, multi-modal models, Mixture of Experts, or LLM tooling.
- Familiarity with MLOps and cloud platforms like AWS SageMaker, Azure ML, or Google AI Platform.
- Experience with frameworks such as LangChain, CrewAI, Autogen, or OpenAI.
- Contributions to open-source projects or AI research publications.
