About the role
Bandwidth is looking for a Software Engineer with a focus on voice technology to join their team in Raleigh, North Carolina. This role centers on building and maintaining software systems that power voice communications across the Bandwidth platform. The engineer will collaborate with the voice engineering group to deliver reliable, high-performance communication features for customers. The work involves designing, implementing, and improving the infrastructure that handles real-time voice traffic at scale. This position contributes directly to the core products that enable businesses to connect with their users through voice calls and messaging. The engineer will take ownership of components within the voice stack and work toward long-term technical goals. The engineer will participate in on-call rotations to ensure the voice platform remains available and responsive around the clock.

What you'll do
Design and implement voice processing features within the Bandwidth communications platform
Write clean, maintainable code for voice routing, signaling, and call management systems
Collaborate with product managers to define technical requirements for voice functionality
Participate in code reviews and contribute to the team's engineering standards and practices
Debug and resolve issues related to voice call quality, latency, and overall reliability
Build and maintain APIs that enable customers to integrate voice capabilities into their own applications
Work with the operations team to monitor voice service health and track performance metrics
Contribute to architectural decisions that shape the long term direction of the voice platform
Write automated tests to ensure the correctness and stability of voice related features
Document technical designs and implementation details for team knowledge sharing and onboarding
Support the deployment of voice features through staged rollouts and canary release strategies
Engage with customers to understand voice use cases and translate needs into technical solutions
Mentor junior engineers and share knowledge through technical presentations and written guides
Evaluate new tools and frameworks that could improve the voice development workflow
Participate in sprint planning and help estimate effort for upcoming voice feature work
Refactor existing voice code to improve performance, reduce technical debt, and support growing customer demand
Coordinate with the security team to ensure voice data is handled in accordance with privacy standards
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related technical field is required
Experience programming in languages commonly used for backend or systems development work
Solid understanding of telecommunications protocols and voice call flow fundamentals is expected
Familiarity with real-time systems and low-latency application design principles is important
Ability to write well-structured, tested code following established best practices and coding standards
Comfort working in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities and multiple concurrent workstreams
Strong written and verbal communication skills for effective cross-team collaboration and technical planning
Experience with version control systems and collaborative software development workflows is necessary
Knowledge of containerization and orchestration tools provides an advantage in this role
A demonstrated history of delivering software solutions on time and meeting quality standards
Nice to have
Prior experience with SIP or other voice signaling protocols is highly beneficial
Knowledge of cloud infrastructure platforms and containerized deployment workflows is very helpful
Exposure to DevOps practices including CI/CD pipelines and service monitoring tools is valued
Familiarity with audio codecs and voice quality optimization techniques is a welcome plus
Understanding of telecommunications regulatory frameworks and compliance considerations provides an advantage
Experience with distributed systems and microservices architecture is a strong plus

This position is based in Raleigh, NC and is expected to be on-site at the company office
