About the role
Airship is on the lookout for a Global Payroll Manager to take charge of payroll operations both in the U.S. and across various international locations. This position is pivotal in establishing and enhancing a payroll system that is accurate, compliant, and efficient, leveraging standardized procedures and industry best practices to achieve these goals.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Manage the complete payroll cycle for U.S. employees on a bi-weekly basis and for international employees on a monthly schedule, ensuring accurate salary calculations, deductions, statutory contributions, and benefits administration.
- Oversee payroll accounting tasks, including the preparation of journal entries and the reconciliation of general ledger accounts.
- Coordinate year-end payroll processes, including tax reporting and compliance filings specific to each country.
- Serve as the main point of contact for employee payroll-related questions, providing clear and confidential support.
- Develop, document, and put into action global payroll policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure consistency and compliance.
- Identify opportunities for process enhancements and system improvements to boost overall efficiency in payroll operations.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable payroll regulations and tax laws in every country where the company operates.
- Conduct payroll audits and work closely with both internal and external auditors to ensure accuracy and compliance.
- Manage relationships with international payroll service providers, assessing their performance and ensuring they meet service level agreements.
- Collaborate with teams in People Operations, Finance, and IT to guarantee accurate data management and system integrations.
- Design and deliver training sessions on payroll processes to relevant teams within the organization.
- Monitor and report on key performance indicators related to global payroll operations, providing insights for continuous improvement.
- Supervise payroll processing staff, providing mentorship and support to ensure high-quality work.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of experience in a Global or International Payroll Manager role, with a solid understanding of U.S. multi-state payroll and knowledge of payroll regulations in countries such as the UK, France, Germany, Singapore, or India.
- Proven experience in developing and documenting payroll policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Strong grasp of payroll best practices, including reconciliation, auditing, and quality assurance, with a capability to address complex payroll challenges across multiple jurisdictions.
- Experience in managing payroll vendors and ensuring compliance with established service level agreements.
- Demonstrated ability to implement payroll system solutions and lead initiatives aimed at process improvement.
- Exceptional attention to detail, along with strong organizational and time management skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to handle sensitive employee issues with professionalism and empathy.
- Familiarity with data protection laws such as GDPR.
- Proficient in UKG Payroll and Reporting, as well as G-Suite applications, particularly Sheets and Excel.
- A willingness to explore AI tools or a desire to learn about them.
Nice to have
- Experience in leading payroll transformation initiatives, including system implementations and process standardization efforts.
- Knowledge of HRIS systems like UKG, ADP, or SAP, and their integration with payroll functions.
- Background in payroll operations within a SaaS or technology-focused organization.
- Possession of a professional payroll certification (e.g., CPP, FPC, CIPP) or a project management certification.
- A commitment to ongoing learning about global payroll regulations and advancements in technology.

Practical notes
This position is fully remote and may involve up to 10% travel. The starting base salary ranges from $90,000 to $125,000 USD annually. Total compensation includes stock options.
