About the role

Agoda is on the lookout for a Senior Counsel to oversee legal considerations related to data privacy, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence within our fintech and payments sector. In this pivotal role, you will act as the chief legal advisor for stakeholders in the fintech domain, working collaboratively across various departments and with other brands under Booking Holdings to develop innovative products from inception to launch.

What you'll do

• Deliver comprehensive legal advice on privacy, artificial intelligence, and data protection for global initiatives in fintech and payments.
• Analyze and implement international regulations such as GDPR, UK GDPR, Data Use and Access Act, CCPA, PDPA, PIPA, APPI, GLBA, and PSD2.
• Collaborate with teams in Technology, Product Development, Security, and Finance to embed privacy-by-design principles throughout the product development lifecycle.
• Conduct data mapping exercises and lead privacy impact assessments to identify and mitigate risks.
• Review, negotiate, and finalize privacy and AI-related terms in contracts with technology and payment service providers.
• Oversee regulatory submissions, audits, and manage responses to inquiries from data protection and financial regulatory bodies.
• Draft and refine privacy notices, internal policies, and documentation aimed at enhancing privacy protocols and processes.
• Provide training and guidance to internal teams on compliance with privacy laws and regulations.
• Stay updated on emerging trends and changes in privacy legislation and technology to ensure proactive compliance.
• Foster strong relationships with internal stakeholders to promote a culture of privacy awareness within the organization.
• Support the development of privacy-related strategies that align with Agoda's business objectives and risk appetite.

Requirements

• A minimum of 6 years of post-qualification legal experience, with at least 2 years spent at a well-regarded law firm.
• Juris Doctor or equivalent law degree from a prestigious institution, demonstrating strong academic credentials.
• Substantial experience providing legal counsel on privacy issues, particularly in the fintech, payments, or financial services sectors.
• In-depth knowledge of global privacy regulations and payment laws, including GDPR, CCPA, PDPA, PIPA, APPI, and PSD2.
• Exceptional skills in drafting legal documents, negotiating contracts, and managing relationships with stakeholders in a dynamic, matrixed environment.
• Ability to work independently while also being an effective team player, demonstrating strong problem-solving capabilities.

Nice to have

• Certification in data privacy, such as CIPP, or a commitment to obtain such certification shortly after joining.
• Legal qualification in England, Singapore, or another common law jurisdiction would be advantageous.
• Previous experience in a technology-focused company or involvement with tech-driven products is a plus.
• Familiarity with emerging technologies and their implications for privacy and data protection.

• Proficient in contract negotiation, regulatory compliance, data mapping techniques, and conducting privacy impact assessments.
