Adyen seeks a Senior Regulatory Counsel who will own the strategic oversight of regulatory compliance within India for payments and financial services. This role deeply influences the importance of regulatory adherence across local and global operations while acting as a trusted strategic business partner to stakeholders. The hire will navigate the evolving regulatory landscape, ensuring ethical solutions and resilient frameworks are implemented effectively. You will champion integrity, mentor colleagues, and drive initiatives that align with Adyen's mission to transform how the world pays. What you'll do
- Regulatory Monitoring: Monitor regulatory developments in India, including Reserve Bank of India circulars and policies, and advise on their impact and implementation on Adyen's local and global operations.
- Operational Excellence: Operationalize complex regulatory requirements in India and monitor compliance on an ongoing basis.
- Advisory & Support: Provide pragmatic legal and regulatory advice to internal stakeholders (Risk, Legal, Finance, Operations and Commercial teams) to accelerate the growth in India. Be a trusted partner to the Product and Tech teams to design, build and launch innovative payments/financial products in accordance with regulatory requirements.
- Regulatory Submissions: Manage various routine and ad hoc regulatory requests, filings, engagements and reporting obligations with the RBI and other relevant authorities.
- Strategic Representation: Represent the regulatory team on cross-functional projects to frame regulatory strategy and align it with global organizational objectives.
- Commercial Partnership: Advise on and negotiate various agreements with merchants, service providers, and external partners while ensuring compliant solutions align with commercial strategy.
- Policy Analysis: Analyze and summarize regulatory policies, guidelines, bills, and acts (e.g., PA-CB, KYC Master Directions, DPDP Act 2023).
- Apply expert regulatory expertise to provide exemplary advice on complex regulatory matters across multiple domains.
- Shape Adyen's regulatory and integrity frameworks, acting as a subject matter expert for both internal and external stakeholders.
- Skillfully strike a balance between risk and commercial needs, acting as a multiplier by guiding other team members to achieve the same.
- Understand the mindset and policies of regulators and auditors to make strategic regulatory decisions.
- Masterfully adapt communication style and messaging (written and verbal) to different audiences, providing clear and concise updates and challenges.
- Advocate Adyen's position on complex matters to external stakeholders and effectively influence their views.
- Provide mentorship to junior colleagues, applying a multiplier effect across the team.
- Initiate and own complex, high-impact cross-functional projects, managing stakeholders and resources effectively while navigating roadblocks.
- Identify opportunities to involve junior colleagues in projects to support their professional growth.
- Assist with creating Global Function OKRs and develop dedicated program management for projects within the team.
- Identify large-scale projects that drive organizational efficiencies globally with a 10x mentality.
- Offer guidance in complex situations and clear roadblocks that hinder regional or global progress.
Requirements
- You are qualified as a lawyer in India.
- You are fully proficient in English.
- You have at least 10+ years of post-qualification experience in regulatory or compliance teams of RBI-regulated entities or have extensively advised such entities.
- You have deep working knowledge of the payments, banking, and/or financial services industry, including acquiring and card networks.
- You are an analytical thinker who can set and monitor policies required to ensure controlled and sustainable growth.
- You have solid interpersonal skills and the ability to liaise with diverse internal and external stakeholders and merchants across different cultures.
- You must already be or be willing to reside in Mumbai, India.
