About the role
The Design System Lead Opportunity at Zopa
Zopa represents a significant evolution in financial services, originating as the United Kingdom's first peer-to-peer lending platform in 2005. This foundational mission established a legacy of challenging traditional banking models. The next major milestone arrived in 2020 with the launch of Zopa Bank. This launch was not merely an expansion; it was a deliberate reversal of industry norms, built specifically to address the aspects of finance that customers disliked. The organization's core philosophy centers on placing people at the heart of banking, empowering individuals to achieve their goals and drive finance forward. This page details a critical leadership position within the team making this vision a reality.
The Experience Design team is the central nervous system for customer interaction at Zopa. Its primary mandate is to define and shape the complete end-to-end customer journey across all Zopa products and services. Within this team, the Design Systems function operates as the foundational pillar. This function provides the essential architecture and components that allow product teams to move with speed while ensuring every customer touchpoint maintains a consistent, high standard of quality. The team has recently completed a major rebuild of its design system. This rebuild was a strategic necessity, moving the platform to a native environment. The goal was to establish a robust, future-facing foundation, replacing what could have become a complex and restrictive legacy system.
This Design System Lead role is pivotal to the next phase of that journey. You will be the owner of the design system, transforming it into a strategic platform that enables scalable delivery and elevates the entire product landscape. The position requires a leader who can navigate the intersection of design, engineering, and product strategy. You will be instrumental in defining how Zopa builds for the future.
Role Overview and Core Responsibilities
As the Design System Lead, you will set the strategic direction for the design system as a scalable platform for all banking products. Your primary focus will be on enabling product teams to deliver features rapidly without compromising on quality or consistency. You will coordinate requirements and intake directly from various product teams, translating their needs into a clear component strategy. A significant part of your role involves building and maintaining a library of reusable design patterns and front-end components. These patterns must align engineering and design practices, creating a single source of truth.
You will be responsible for reviewing all implementations to ensure strict adherence to established standards across every product. This ensures the integrity of the user interface is maintained as the platform evolves. Your work will directly ship updates that enhance consistency and, more importantly, build user trust in the interface. Collaboration is key; you will partner closely with research teams to validate insights and refine customer journeys based on data and feedback. also, you will champion accessibility as a non-negotiable standard, ensuring every interaction meets the highest usability benchmarks. You will guide teams on the practical application of design tokens and the creation of comprehensive documentation. Managing the system's roadmap will be another core duty, balancing the need for quick wins against long-term strategic goals. Finally, you will mentor a small, dedicated team, fostering an environment of strong collaboration and continuous professional growth.
Required Qualifications and Experience
This position demands a candidate with a proven track record in managing a design system within a complex digital product environment. A strong portfolio is essential, showcasing not just aesthetic design work, but also clear evidence of system thinking and real-world application. You must demonstrate a history of successful collaboration with both engineering and product stakeholders. Your expertise must include deep, practical knowledge of design tools and front-end implementation principles. Experience working within a regulated financial services environment is not just beneficial; it is a mandatory requirement for this role.
Preferred Skills and Tools
While not mandatory, familiarity with AI design tools and automated workflows would be a distinct advantage in streamlining processes. The core technical toolkit for this role includes Figma for design, and React, Storybook, TypeScript, Node, and Python for implementation and integration.
Practical Information
The role is based in London and is a permanent, employee position. The compensation package is competitive, with a salary range of £65,000 to £85,000 per year. Before applying, we strongly advise you to confirm the precise details and requirements on the official application page.
