Android Engineer

About the role

You will join Zopa and help reshape our Android platform by driving the migration from React Native to a native Kotlin experience. You will work alongside product and design to translate user needs into reliable native features. Using Kotlin and modern Android tooling, you will build, test, and release functionality that meets our quality and security standards. This role is hybrid, requiring 2 to 3 days in our London office.

What you'll do

• Own the migration of key modules from React Native to native Android, writing Kotlin code that integrates cleanly with existing services and APIs.
• Collaborate closely with other native mobile engineers to design, build, and evolve the Android platform as we expand our native capabilities.
• Lead root cause analysis for production and staging issues, using logs, monitoring, and user reports to identify underlying causes and prevent recurrence.
• Close the loop with stakeholders by validating fixes, confirming resolution, and documenting outcomes so that future incidents are handled more efficiently.
• Improve system reliability by introducing observability enhancements, structured logging, and robust error handling across the Android codebase.
• Conduct risk assessments for upcoming Android features, evaluating technical feasibility, security implications, and user impact before implementation decisions.
• Partner with cross-functional teams including product, design, and data to define acceptance criteria, prioritize work, and align on product outcomes.
• Communicate technical tradeoffs and implementation status clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences during planning and review discussions.
• Build and maintain reusable components and libraries that standardize common patterns, reducing duplication and improving consistency across Android applications.
• Support the broader engineering workflow by contributing to code reviews, refining build processes, and helping evolve development practices.
• Guide the team on Android best practices, security considerations, and performance optimizations as we expand our native capabilities.
• Report to an Engineering Manager within one of our teams, with final team placement agreed during the final stages of the interview process.

Requirements

• Must have demonstrated experience developing Android applications using Kotlin.
• Must have the right to work in the country of choice, subject to having the right to work in the country of choice.
• Must comply with our approach to AI use in hiring and day-to-day work as part of our AI fluency commitment.
• Must be able to work hybrid in our London office 2 to 3 days per week.
• Must be able to report to an Engineering Manager and work within a designated team placement.
• Must collaborate effectively within an agile delivery team.
