Senior Fullstack Engineer
Job description
About the role
The role advances real-time audio and voice capabilities for global audiences, and the team experiments with edge technologies to evolve podcasting platforms. You will own the design and implementation of features that directly impact how creators and listeners interact with live audio at scale. A core part of this position involves translating ambiguous product requirements into robust technical solutions that balance performance, reliability, and user experience. You will work at the intersection of frontend user interfaces and backend infrastructure, ensuring that audio data flows seamlessly across the network. The position requires a proactive mindset where you identify bottlenecks and propose architectural improvements without waiting for direction. You will collaborate closely with product, design, and other engineers to iterate quickly while maintaining a high bar for code quality. Ultimately, you will be responsible for building the systems that make distributed voice communication feel instantaneous and reliable.
Key facts
What you'll do
Architect and maintain server-side logic and data models using Node.js to power core audio features for a distributed user base. Optimize client and server performance by applying advanced caching, bundling, and database sharding strategies for scalable consumer applications. Build and consume REST and streaming APIs that integrate with cloud services so that voice data moves reliably at scale. Write resilient unit, integration, and load tests to validate correctness and stability across browser and Node.js runtime contexts. Collaborate with product and designers to translate specifications into frontend and backend implementations that serve end-user needs. Mentor teammates and share practices that uphold code quality, security standards, and modern engineering design. Implement monitoring and observability strategies to detect regressions and performance issues in real-time audio pipelines. Evaluate and adopt new tools and frameworks that reduce technical debt and improve developer ergonomics.
Requirements
Demonstrate significant experience with Node.js and solid grasp of JavaScript fundamentals such as runtime behavior and asynchronous patterns. Bring ambition to solve hard technical problems and initiative to explore founding or building ambitious products. Write clean JavaScript or TypeScript with consistent style and strong type discipline. Design for performance by choosing efficient algorithms, compression, and database strategies that handle large user loads. Be equally comfortable developing for browser environments and Node.js runtime deployments in cloud infrastructure. Contribute effectively in a fully distributed team by communicating clearly and aligning on priorities. Maintain a strong sense of ownership for production systems, including debugging complex issues in live environments. Adhere to security and data protection best practices when handling audio streams and user information.
Nice to have
Experience building high traffic, low latency systems that handle spikes and scale globally. Apply Digital Signal Processing techniques to audio processing and real-time communication.
Skills & tools
Core tools include Node.js, React, and TypeScript for frontend and backend services. Data stores span document and key-value systems such as Redis and MongoDB, alongside relational databases. Runtime environments span browsers and Node.js, supported by cloud APIs from major infrastructure providers. Testing frameworks cover unit, integration, and load testing suites.
Practical notes
The role is based in a fully distributed team with an office in San Francisco, and remote work flexibility is offered based on role needs. Travel is not explicitly required, and the team follows an agile cadence in a fast-paced startup environment.
Typical interview steps
Hiring for engineering roles usually starts with a recruiter screen, followed by one or two technical rounds. Candidates often solve a coding problem, discuss past projects, and answer system design questions. Some loops include a take-home task. Final rounds typically cover team fit and give candidates a chance to ask questions. Interviewers look for how you break down unfamiliar problems, not just whether you reach the answer. Practicing a few problems aloud and reviewing your own past projects are the best preparation.
Good to know
Work centers on real-time audio streaming and voice-enabled features in a distributed team. Engineers rely on strong frontend and backend skills to maintain performance and reliability. The environment values open source contributions, fast growth, and rigorous engineering practices. The role emphasizes user empathy, clear communication, and adherence to security and design standards.
