About the role

This internship provides a focused opportunity to directly enhance the reliability and usability of Zello's data analytics for the go-to-market team. You will take ownership of key data surfaces, driving improvements to existing dashboards and building new data tools that are both accurate and accessible to non-technical stakeholders. Success in this role depends on your ability to translate technical findings into clear insights that business teams can act upon without assistance. You will work closely with the Data & AI team as a hands-on contributor, solving concrete problems rather than only supporting larger initiatives. A significant part of your responsibility involves ensuring that every dashboard and data artifact you touch remains trustworthy and well-organized. You will be expected to question existing setups, propose thoughtful adjustments, and see projects through from initial analysis to final recommendation. This position is designed for someone who wants deep exposure to how business intelligence powers real-world decision making in a growing company.

Key facts

What you'll do

• Redesign and accelerate dashboards within Omni, Zello's business intelligence platform, with an emphasis on clarity and performance.
• Develop Omni topics that empower non-technical colleagues to independently answer their data questions using a governed layer of metrics.
• Write SQL queries in Snowflake to extract, validate, and reconcile data, and interpret dbt models to confirm they align with business definitions.
• Manage small analytical projects from initial question through clean data preparation, analysis, and actionable recommendation.
• Document new creations in detail and audit existing reports, recommending whether to keep, combine, or remove them based on actual usage.
• Utilize AI tools, including Claude, to streamline routine tasks such as drafting queries or summarizing results, always verifying outputs for correctness.
• Present your findings in team meetings and clearly communicate any inconsistencies in data, including potential causes and suggested next steps.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to gather requirements, translate them into analytical specifications, and ensure the final deliverables match their intent.
• Implement monitoring for key dashboards to detect sudden drops in data quality or unexpected changes in key metrics.
• Support the data team by maintaining internal SQL snippets, query patterns, and configuration notes that reduce repeated work.
• Translate ambiguous requests into well-scoped analyses, identifying the minimum viable dataset needed to answer the question.
• Contribute to data hygiene by identifying broken links, deprecated reports, and opportunities for consolidation across dashboards.
• Use version control practices where applicable to track changes to queries, documentation, and dashboard revisions.
• Mentor a less experienced team member on at least one tool or process, reinforcing your own knowledge while improving team-wide efficiency.

Requirements

• Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate academic program, with a defined timeline for degree completion.
• Able to work approximately 20 hours per week on-site in Austin through early December, with a consistent schedule that supports team collaboration.
• Proficient in writing SQL queries, including joins and aggregations, and debugging query results to resolve discrepancies.
• Capable of explaining complex data concepts to non-technical individuals and tracing data origins back to source tables and logic.
• Meticulous in checking your own work for accuracy before submission, using techniques such as spot checks, row counts, and sanity tests.
• Has independently expanded a project beyond its initial scope, demonstrating initiative and a desire to solve deeper problems.
• Produces thorough documentation for others to easily continue your work, including assumptions, limitations, and known edge cases.
• Experienced with using AI tools for practical tasks and verifying their results, understanding both the opportunities and the risks of automation.
• Comfortable working in a hybrid, on-site environment where in-person communication is the default mode of collaboration.
• Familiarity with business intelligence concepts such as metrics, dimensions, and grain, even if learned through coursework or personal projects.
• Willingness to follow established data governance practices and contribute to improving them over time.
• Strong written communication skills, with the ability to structure findings in a concise and logically ordered format.
• Basic understanding of data modeling principles, including the difference between transactional and dimensional structures.
• Openness to feedback and ability to iterate on analyses based on stakeholder input without becoming defensive.

Nice to have

• Experience with the specific tools in Zello's stack, including Omni, Snowflake, and dbt, reducing ramp-up time for responsibilities.
• Prior exposure to building dashboards or metrics in a business intelligence tool, with examples that demonstrate thoughtful design choices.
• Coursework or projects that involved statistical analysis, experimentation, or A/B testing, showing comfort with quantitative rigor.
• Familiarity with version control systems like Git, particularly for data-related artifacts such as SQL scripts or documentation.
• Any previous work that involved mentoring or knowledge sharing, indicating an aptitude for helping teammates improve their data literacy.

This is an on-site, hybrid role in Austin, emphasizing in-person collaboration. The intern is expected to be present during core working hours to participate in team discussions, code reviews, and stakeholder check-ins. The schedule is fixed at approximately 20 hours per week, aligned with academic calendars to ensure sustained engagement through early December.
