Senior Manager, Machine Learning
Job description
About the role
This role owns the architecture and delivery of validated machine learning systems for regulated health applications within the Health Machine Learning organization. You will lead the end-to-end lifecycle of Software as a Medical Device (SaMD), translating research concepts into clinically validated products that meet strict safety and efficacy standards. The position requires dual mastery of machine learning methodology and regulatory compliance to ensure WHOOP features perform reliably in real-world conditions. You will build and lead high-performing teams, establishing the operational model for regulated AI development and fostering a culture of quality and rigor. Success in this role means driving both technical excellence and organizational growth while navigating complex regulatory landscapes with scientific integrity.
Key facts
What you'll do
You will define and execute the strategy for regulated ML development, creating robust processes that translate business objectives into actionable plans for the Health Machine Learning team.
A core function is owning the delivery and health of multiple workstreams within the ML SaMD team, ensuring alignment with department goals and maintaining momentum across critical initiatives.
You will translate these strategies into clear quarterly plans, defining specific milestones, success criteria, and resource allocations that account for regulatory constraints.
Your leadership will establish the highest-use work for ML scientists and engineers, adapting plans as the market and business evolve while preserving validation integrity.
You will build and scale high-caliber teams, leading large-scale hiring and setting the standard for regulated development practices across the function.
This role involves coaching both junior and senior ICs, managing performance with empathy and clarity to develop talent capable of thriving in a compliance-heavy environment.
You create the conditions where professionals can operate above their current level, raising the bar for technical rigor, communication, and accountability across the team.
You will set the definitive standard for how regulated ML is built at WHOOP, including methodology definition, enforcement of work quality, and ensuring validation rigor.
You will partner directly with regulatory, quality, clinical science, product, software, and firmware leaders to align on product roadmaps and manage dependencies effectively.
These partnerships are critical for negotiating timelines while balancing iteration speed with regulatory obligations and maintaining traceability across the development lifecycle.
Requirements
The ideal candidate brings 7+ years of cumulative experience in ML, applied science, or software engineering, demonstrating depth across multiple technical domains.
This must include a minimum of 3 years managing teams in engineering and/or science roles, with direct experience leading complex technical initiatives.
A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Applied Math, Biomedical Engineering, or a related quantitative field is required for this position.
You possess a proven track record of developing and managing Individual Contributors, including hiring, performance management, and career development.
Your experience covers the full ML development lifecycle, from data collection and model training through evaluation, validation, deployment, and ongoing monitoring in production environments.
This depth allows you to evaluate the most critical technical and methodological decisions your team faces while balancing innovation with risk mitigation.
You have a direct track record of shipping algorithms or ML-enabled software within regulated environments, demonstrating comfort with uncertainty and strict timelines.
This experience is grounded in standards such as FDA regulations, IEC 62304, ISO 13485, and ISO 14971, which form the foundation of your decision-making.
You operate fluently across regulatory, quality, and clinical stakeholder groups, ensuring alignment between technical execution and compliance requirements.
Your expertise includes familiarity with verification and validation (V&V), traceability, change control, design history, and audit readiness for SaMD products.
Practical notes
This role is based in the WHOOP office located in Boston, MA. The successful candidate must be prepared to relocate if necessary to work from this office.
