About the role

You will lead the structural analysis and design of transportation bridges and related structures for public agency projects across the Midwest and southern United States. You will take ownership of complex design calculations, load ratings, and detailed construction documents that meet strict regulatory standards. You will manage multiple project deliverables from initial concept through final construction documentation while ensuring compliance with AASHTO and applicable DOT requirements. You will coordinate closely with multidisciplinary teams to resolve technical challenges and maintain project timelines and budgets. You will mentor junior engineers by providing technical guidance, design reviews, and constructive feedback to elevate the overall quality of deliverables. You will interface directly with clients and consultants to clarify project scopes, address technical inquiries, and align design solutions with project goals. You will champion continuous improvement by identifying best practices, updating internal procedures, and applying lessons learned to future bridge projects. You will uphold the highest standards of safety, quality, and professionalism in all project phases, reflecting the company's commitment to excellence and client trust.

What you'll do

Perform detailed structural analysis and design for a wide range of bridge types, including conventional and complex configurations, ensuring all solutions meet project specifications and regulatory standards.

Prepare comprehensive design packages for state and local agencies such as MDOT, ODOT, and other DOTs, delivering high-quality construction documents that facilitate efficient project execution.

Apply expertise in structural analysis software and design methodologies to evaluate existing conditions and develop optimized retrofit or rehabilitation strategies.

Lead the preparation of technical reports, calculations, and specifications, emphasizing clarity, accuracy, and thorough documentation for client review and regulatory approval.

Utilize advanced knowledge of AASHTO, AREMA, and DOT design standards to guide the selection of appropriate materials, load factors, and detailing requirements for each project.

Leverage proficiency in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroStation, and Geopak/ORD to produce precise drawings, models, and design outputs that align with project workflows.

Conduct thorough evaluations of bridge conditions through NHI Bridge Inspection certification practices, supporting data-driven decisions for maintenance, repair, or replacement.

Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, including project managers, field engineers, and other technical disciplines, to resolve design issues and maintain project momentum.

Support business development activities by producing high-quality technical materials that demonstrate expertise and help secure new transportation projects.

Mentor and guide junior engineering staff by providing technical instruction, design reviews, and career development advice to strengthen the overall engineering team.

Maintain strict organization and time management to balance multiple project demands, meet aggressive deadlines, and uphold consistent quality standards.

Champion innovation by exploring new design techniques, materials, and technologies that improve project outcomes and enhance long-term infrastructure performance.

Represent Wadetrim professionally in client interactions, internal meetings, and industry engagements, reinforcing the company's reputation for reliability and technical excellence.

Ensure all project deliverables comply with contractual obligations, regulatory requirements, and internal quality assurance protocols.

Act as a technical resource for colleagues and stakeholders, clarifying complex concepts and providing actionable solutions to challenging engineering problems.

Requirements

Hold a bachelor's degree in civil engineering with an emphasis in structural engineering from an accredited institution.

Possess a minimum of seven years of transportation structural or bridge design experience working on public agency projects.

Maintain an active Professional Engineer (PE) license in good standing, with the ability to obtain and retain state-specific licenses as project demands require.

Carry a current NHI Bridge Inspection certification or the ability to obtain this certification promptly upon hire.

Demonstrate comprehensive familiarity with structural analysis and design principles for both conventional and complex bridge systems.

Show proven experience preparing design packages for state departments of transportation such as MDOT and ODOT, as well as for local agencies.

Exhibit strong technical writing, organization, and communication skills to produce clear reports, calculations, and construction documents.

Be self-motivated, disciplined, and capable of working independently while also thriving in collaborative team environments.

Be adaptable to a flexible hybrid-remote/office work schedule that aligns with project and team needs.

Nice to have

Preference for candidates with experience in software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroStation, Geopak, and ORD.

Knowledge of AASHTO, AREMA, and various DOT design standards is highly valued.

Experience in leadership, mentoring, or guiding junior engineers on complex transportation projects.

Participation in Employee Resource Groups or professional development programs within a large engineering organization.

Practical notes

This is a full-time position based in Taylor, Michigan.

A flexible hybrid-remote/office work schedule is available based on project and team requirements.

Travel is not required for this role.
