Vetcove is seeking a highly experienced Senior Engineering Manager to lead their engineering team, focusing on fostering team growth, ensuring project success, and maintaining high technical standards. This role involves guiding a team of software engineers through all phases of product development, from initial planning and design to deployment and ongoing maintenance. The ideal candidate will work closely with product managers, other engineering leaders, and the CTO to shape the company's technology strategy and ensure that engineering efforts align with business goals. The position is based at their office location, requiring on-site presence, and offers an opportunity to influence the development of innovative veterinary supply chain solutions. What you'll do
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of software engineers, fostering their professional growth, supporting their career development, and promoting a positive, collaborative team environment.
- Establish clear objectives, expectations, and success metrics for the engineering team, ensuring alignment with company goals and product roadmaps.
- Collaborate closely with product managers, design teams, and other stakeholders to define project requirements, prioritize features, and develop detailed project plans.
- Oversee the entire project lifecycle, including initial planning, architecture design, implementation, testing, deployment, and ongoing maintenance.
- Engage actively in technical discussions, including system design, architectural trade-offs, and evaluating technical solutions to ensure scalable, reliable, and secure systems.
- Provide technical guidance and feedback to engineers, including participating in code reviews, to uphold high engineering standards and best practices.
- Assist engineers in overcoming technical obstacles by providing clarity on priorities, offering technical insights, and sharing expertise.
- Contribute to designing new features and product enhancements, ensuring they meet quality standards and are aligned with scalability and performance goals.
- Drive improvements in system architecture to enhance system scalability, reliability, and performance, ensuring the platform can support future growth.
- Maintain high standards for development practices, code quality, and documentation, fostering a culture of ownership and continuous improvement.
- Work closely with the CTO and other senior leaders to develop and evolve Vetcove's technology strategy, including evaluating new tools, frameworks, and methodologies.
- Support the hiring process by participating in interviews, helping onboard new engineers, and ensuring the team is staffed with talented, motivated individuals.
- Cultivate a remote-friendly culture that emphasizes ownership, collaboration, and accountability, ensuring effective communication and team cohesion despite geographical distances.
- Monitor project progress, identify risks, and implement mitigation strategies to ensure timely delivery of features and projects.
- Promote best practices in security, testing, and deployment to ensure the integrity and stability of the platform.
- Advocate for continuous learning and professional development within the team, encouraging engineers to stay current with industry trends and technologies.
- Facilitate cross-team collaboration to ensure alignment and integration across different engineering functions and departments.
- Represent the engineering team in leadership meetings, providing updates on progress, challenges, and technical initiatives.
Requirements
- A minimum of 7 years of professional software engineering experience, with a strong background in developing modern web applications.
- Proven experience managing, leading, or mentoring software engineers in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
- Demonstrated commitment to people management, coaching, and fostering engineer growth and development.
- Strong technical understanding of system design, architecture, and engineering trade-offs, with the ability to evaluate and recommend technical solutions.
- Ability to participate actively in technical discussions, perform code reviews, and provide constructive feedback.
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or a related field is preferred.
- Experience designing and building scalable, secure, reliable, and high-performance systems.
- Familiarity with database design, query optimization, and data management best practices.
- Comfortable working in a fully remote environment, with excellent communication skills and self-motivation.
- Ability to balance technical leadership with people management responsibilities effectively.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to handle multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Experience working with cross-functional teams and managing stakeholder expectations.
- Knowledge of software development lifecycle, agile methodologies, and continuous integration/deployment practices.
Nice to have
- Experience working in the veterinary or healthcare industry is a plus but not required.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
- Knowledge of security best practices in web applications and infrastructure.
- Experience with DevOps practices, automation, and infrastructure as code.
- Prior experience working in a startup or high-growth environment.
- Additional certifications in project management or technical areas are advantageous.
