The role of Applied AI Staff Engineer at Vetcove centers on driving the integration of advanced artificial intelligence capabilities directly into our core veterinary software suite. You will own the evaluation and implementation of production-ready AI models that enhance diagnostic, procurement, and patient care features for thousands of veterinary hospitals. This position requires you to act as a key technical leader in determining how artificial intelligence can streamline operations and improve outcomes for pet parents and clinicians alike. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to ensure that every AI-driven feature aligns with strict standards for reliability, security, and user experience. What you'll do
- Evaluate and select the most appropriate AI models for our products based on business needs, performance metrics, and integration complexity.
- Design and build robust evaluation frameworks and configure observability platforms to monitor AI performance in production systems.
- Collaborate with the data science team to fine-tune AI models, ensuring optimal performance, accuracy, and scalability within veterinary workflows.
- Develop and maintain AI-powered application features using Python, focusing on clean architecture, maintainability, and efficient execution.
- Test and validate the performance of AI models in real-world scenarios, diagnosing issues and implementing fixes quickly to minimize user impact.
- Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in AI technology, researching and identifying opportunities for innovation within existing and future products.
- Work directly with the CTO and engineering team, as well as cross-functional stakeholders, to continuously evolve the platform and product roadmaps.
- Partner with product managers to translate business requirements into technical AI strategies that enhance the user journey for veterinarians and pet parents.
- Ensure all AI integrations adhere to data privacy, security, and compliance standards relevant to veterinary healthcare applications.
- Document AI model behaviors, integration patterns, and operational procedures to support long-term maintainability and team scalability.
- Mentor junior engineers on best practices for integrating AI components into large-scale software systems.
- Drive proof-of-concept projects that demonstrate the tangible value of AI features before full-scale implementation.
- Analyze user feedback and system telemetry to iteratively improve AI-driven features and workflows.
- Coordinate with infrastructure teams to ensure that deployment pipelines support AI model versioning, rollback, and monitoring.
Requirements
- Hold a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field from an accredited institution.
- Possess at least 4 years of professional software development experience, including at least one production application built with a modern web framework.
- Demonstrate strong knowledge of AI models, including hands-on experience with agent SDKs, agent harnesses, and model fine-tuning techniques.
- Show mastery of strong engineering fundamentals across multiple back-end technologies and programming paradigms.
- Exhibit the ability to design new features around complex data models while maintaining focus on accuracy, security, and performance.
- Maintain a positive attitude and embrace a one-for-all team mentality, fostering collaboration across distributed roles.
- Commit to working within a fully remote structure while sustaining high levels of communication and productivity.
