Senior Software Engineer, Business Systems

About the role

Verkada is looking for a Senior Software Engineer focused on Business Systems to join their growing team in San Mateo, California. In this role, you will design and build software solutions that support core business operations across the organization, from finance and human resources to sales and customer success. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to identify automation opportunities, improve data integrity, and scale internal tools that drive operational efficiency at every level of the company. The position involves taking ownership of complex systems from initial planning through deployment and ongoing maintenance, ensuring that business-critical applications remain reliable and performant as the organization continues to expand.

What you'll do

• Architect and develop internal business applications that streamline company-wide processes and eliminate manual, repetitive workflows across departments
• Collaborate with product, finance, and operations teams to identify automation opportunities and translate complex business requirements into technical solutions
• Build and maintain data pipelines that connect various business systems to ensure consistent, accurate, and reliable information flow throughout the organization
• Design and implement RESTful APIs and integrations between internal platforms and third-party services that the organization relies on daily
• Write clean, well-documented code and conduct thorough code reviews to maintain high standards of quality across the engineering team
• Troubleshoot and resolve production issues in business-critical systems, ensuring minimal disruption to daily operations and rapid recovery when incidents occur
• Create interactive dashboards and automated reporting tools that give stakeholders clear visibility into key business metrics and performance indicators
• Participate in on-call rotations and contribute to incident response procedures for internal systems, following established runbooks and escalation paths
• Mentor junior engineers and actively contribute to a culture of technical excellence, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement within the team
• Evaluate and recommend new tools, frameworks, and technologies that can improve the efficiency, reliability, and scalability of business operations

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience gained through professional work
• Strong proficiency in modern programming languages such as Python, Java, or Go for building scalable and maintainable applications
• Experience designing and working with relational databases and SQL for data modeling, querying, and performance optimization
• Familiarity with RESTful API design principles and integration patterns for connecting disparate systems and services together
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage competing priorities in a fast-paced, ambiguous, and rapidly changing environment
• Solid understanding of software engineering best practices including version control, automated testing, and deployment workflows for reliable releases
• Experience collaborating with cross-functional business teams to deliver software solutions that meet real operational needs and improve workflows
• Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly and effectively to non-technical stakeholders, business partners, and leadership across the organization

Nice to have

• Prior experience working at a fast-growing technology company or startup environment where adaptability and resourcefulness are essential
• Familiarity with business intelligence tools and data visualization platforms for building internal reports and self-service analytics capabilities
• Exposure to cloud infrastructure providers such as AWS or Google Cloud Platform for hosting, scaling, and deploying applications
• Background in business operations, finance, or analytics that informs a practical and grounded approach to system design and problem solving

Skills & tools

• Programming languages including Python, Java, or Go for building scalable and maintainable application backends and services
• SQL and hands-on experience with relational database systems such as PostgreSQL or MySQL for data modeling and complex querying
• REST API design and integration with external services and internal platforms to enable smooth data exchange between systems
• Version control using Git and familiarity with CI/CD pipelines for automated testing, building, and deploying software changes reliably
• Cloud platforms such as Amazon Web Services or Google Cloud Platform for infrastructure provisioning, monitoring, and application hosting
• Data modeling, ETL processes, and working with business intelligence and reporting tools to support decision-making across teams

• This is a full-time position based in Verkada's San Mateo, California office with regular in-person collaboration expected with teammates and business partners
