About the role
Verkada is seeking a Staff Data Engineer to build the core infrastructure, data models, and pipelines that serve as the single source of truth for our enterprise data. You will report to the Head of Data and work directly with Finance, Sales, Marketing, Product, and HR teams to drive data-informed decision-making. This role is based at our headquarters in San Mateo, CA, and requires an onsite presence five days per week.

What you'll do
- Architect and maintain scalable warehouse infrastructure to ensure high-quality reporting and insights.
- Manage the design and deployment of automated data pipelines from APIs, databases, business systems, and data lakes.
- Lead cross-departmental efforts to create bronze, silver, and gold data models while enforcing governance standards.
- Collaborate with business stakeholders to define requirements and establish data quality benchmarks.
- Partner with the Head of Data to set the engineering roadmap, prioritizing technical debt and business objectives.
- Oversee project lifecycles from design to production using GitHub and Jira.
- Establish platform-wide engineering standards, including CI/CD practices, testing frameworks, and documentation.
- Implement strategies for data security, regulatory compliance, and integrity.
- Mentor and provide technical leadership for the data engineering team.
Requirements
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field.
- Minimum of 10 years of professional data engineering experience.
- Expert-level proficiency in Python and SQL.
- Experience with cloud warehouses such as BigQuery, Snowflake, or Databricks using DBT.
- Proficiency in managing data lakes with open-source formats like Apache Iceberg, Delta Lake, or Apache Hudi.
- Proven ability to build automated pipelines using Airflow, Dagster, or Fivetran.
- Ability to work onsite in San Mateo, CA, five days per week.
Nice to have
- Experience with data observability and quality platforms such as Monte Carlo, BigEye, or Great Expectations.
- Familiarity with building vector databases for Generative AI applications.
- Experience developing Gen AI agents to optimize data engineering workflows or support business intelligence inquiries.
