First Robotics Competition Coach
Job description
About the role
First Robotics Competition Coach Opportunity at Uncommon Schools
Uncommon Schools invites applications for a First Robotics Competition (FRC) Coach to lead the program at Washington Park High School. This role is integral to providing students with a rigorous competitive experience that supports their growth and long-term academic success. The coach will guide a project-based class and extend learning beyond the classroom through dedicated after-school hours and intensive seasonal commitments.
Position Overview
This part-time coaching position is responsible for developing student potential through structured robotics instruction and competition preparation. The role operates on an academic calendar with concentrated effort during the build season and lighter duties in the spring. The coach will report to the Enrichment Program Manager and work closely with school leadership to ensure alignment with student goals and family needs.
Key Responsibilities
Project sessions will be held twice weekly for one hour each, running from August through June. During the fall and spring semesters, the coach will meet with students on Tuesdays and Thursdays for structured instruction. Additional after-school practice sessions will also be held on these same days to reinforce skills and teamwork.
From January through April, the build season requires a significant increase in time and involvement. The coach will provide eight hours of weekly support to guide students through design, construction, and testing. This period demands hands-on leadership and consistent presence to mentor teams through critical development milestones.
Outside of school hours, the role requires a minimum of six hours per week dedicated to student preparation. This time is essential for refining strategies, reviewing performance, and ensuring students are fully prepared for competition demands. Spring responsibilities shift toward program closure, including material inventory, ordering supplies, and transitioning leadership to the next cohort of students.
The program includes participation in two to three competition weekends annually. These events include off-season challenges and at least one regional or district competition. Registration and active participation in these events are required components of the role.
Family Communication and Student Selection
Student selection involves collaboration with the school-based Student Talent Manager. Once team members are identified, the coach will work with this manager to confirm commitments and secure signed parent permission forms. These documents outline the necessary after-school dedication and family support.
To keep families informed, the coach will establish a communication channel using the Remind app. This platform will deliver timely updates regarding practices, competition travel, and any off-campus activities. Clear and consistent messaging helps maintain alignment between school, home, and student responsibilities.
Compensation and Benefits
Coaches will receive an annual stipend ranging from $5,000 to $7,000, determined by experience and contracted hours. Payments are distributed semi-monthly throughout the academic year. If responsibilities are discontinued before completion, the stipend will be adjusted proportionally.
