Uncommon Collegiate Charter High School seeks an experienced step coach to lead a student team on a competitive academic and performance pathway. This role guides students through rigorous preparation for nationally recognized competitions that provide a distinct advantage in college admissions and college persistence. The coach manages the complete competition cycle, handling identification, registration, tryouts, and student motivation while maintaining clear communication with school leadership. This is a part-time position that reports directly to the Student Talent Manager.

Responsibilities

The coach is responsible for up to six hours of weekly preparation outside standard school hours. This includes a minimum of two hours dedicated to preparing for projects and competitions during the week. Long-term coaching occurs during designated "Projects" time, with sessions scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays for one hour each day from August through June. Additional practice time averages at least six hours weekly, conducted outside the school day to ready students for contest. Internal staff members serving in this coaching capacity must manage their own schedules to address any absences caused by tournament travel during standard work hours.

The competition schedule requires participation in at least six weekend tournaments over a rolling six-month period. The coach is tasked with researching and identifying tournaments that align with student goals and academic values. Registration for these events is handled in partnership with the school-based Student Talent Manager. The coach must attend and guide students to at least one nationally recognized competition that features regional or district qualifiers, creating a pathway to national-level participation. To build readiness, the coach must also chaperone students to a minimum of two regional or local competitions that occur prior to the national event.

Family Communication

Given the significant time commitment required for after-school practices, the school-based Student Talent Manager and the coach will jointly identify team members and secure confirmation of commitment. This process includes obtaining a signed parent permission form that details the after-school obligations. In collaboration with the Student Talent Manager, the coach will establish a family communication protocol using the Remind app. This system will deliver timely updates to families concerning competition details, after-school practice schedules, and any additional club-related activities occurring outside of school hours.

Compensation and Details

Coaches receive an annual stipend ranging from $5,000 to $9,000, determined by experience and contracted hours. Payment is issued semi-monthly. Should the coach cease performing the required duties before the conclusion of the year, the stipend will be adjusted accordingly.

Requirements

The coach must manage up to six hours of preparation weekly outside regular school duties. Direct student coaching is required on Tuesdays and Thursdays during long-term projects. A commitment to at least one recognized national competition over a six-month period is mandatory. The coach must also chaperone a minimum of two regional competitions that occur before the primary national event. Handling sign-ups in collaboration with the school-based Talent Manager is essential.
