About the role
You will own the architecture and long-term technical direction of Twilio's Android SDK for Voice and Video. This role centers on building and delivering core communication functionalities that power thousands of customer businesses globally. You will lead the development and maintenance of the Android SDKs, including the underlying WebRTC and C++ layers that drive real-time connectivity. Your work will directly define Android best practices and serve as the definitive technical resource across the organization. You will collaborate closely with iOS, JavaScript, and React Native teams to ensure cross-platform alignment and convergence. You will conduct thorough code reviews to uphold strict standards of quality, correctness, and test coverage. You will partner with product and platform leads to evaluate feasibility, estimate effort, and deliver on critical roadmap commitments. You will contribute to knowledge sharing and documentation to reduce single points of failure on the team.

What you'll do
- Own the Android SDK architecture, implementation, and long-term technical direction for Voice and Video features.
- Own the Android SDKs' technical backlog and architectural roadmap to align with evolving product strategy.
- Lead development and maintenance of the Android Voice and Video SDKs, including the underlying WebRTC/ReSiprocate/C++ layer.
- Drive build pipeline stability and actively participate in CI/CD migration efforts to streamline delivery.
- Define Android best practices and serve as the go-to resource for Android-specific guidance across the organization.
- Collaborate with iOS, JavaScript, and React Native SDK teams to align on cross-platform convergence efforts and shared standards.
- Conduct thorough code reviews and hold the bar high on quality, correctness, and test coverage for all deliverables.
- Partner with product and platform leads to evaluate feasibility, estimate effort accurately, and execute on roadmap commitments.
- Contribute to knowledge sharing and documentation initiatives to reduce single points of failure and improve team resilience.
- Continuously adapt to the evolving Android ecosystem to maximize engineering efficiency and leverage new capabilities.
- Enhance automated tests to achieve high levels of code coverage and ensure robust, reliable functionality.
- Own Twilio's customer developer experience by refining SDKs, tools, and workflows that impact external consumers.
- Monitor and triage customer issues and Git repository issues to maintain high satisfaction and stability.
- Enhance Twilio Voice and Video Android reference apps to demonstrate best practices and accelerate customer adoption.
Requirements
You must possess 10+ years of software engineering experience with a strong focus on Android development to be considered for this role. You bring deep expertise in Kotlin and Java, along with a solid understanding of modern Android frameworks and libraries. Your background includes significant experience working with or contributing to large-scale, high-availability systems that impact customers globally. You are proficient in C++ and have hands-on experience with WebRTC or similar real-time communication technologies. You understand the intricacies of Android build systems, dependency management, and testing frameworks to ensure reliable releases. You have a proven track record of collaborating across cross-functional teams, including product managers, designers, and engineers from other platforms. You communicate clearly and constructively in both written and verbal formats, ensuring alignment across distributed teams. You are comfortable working in a remote-first environment and actively contributing to a culture of inclusion and global teamwork.
Nice to have
Experience contributing to open source projects relevant to communication platforms and SDK development. Familiarity with CI/CD tooling and infrastructure migration initiatives. Background with performance optimization and debugging complex issues in distributed systems. Exposure to customer-facing technical support or professional services environments. Understanding of contact center and healthcare compliance considerations related to communications platforms. Experience mentoring engineers and contributing to technical documentation at scale.
Practical notes
This role is fully remote with a requirement to live in the United States. You may be asked to report in person on an ad-hoc basis for team gatherings, functional off-sites, or customer meetings. No specific working hours are mandated, allowing for flexibility within a results-driven environment.
