Software Engineer - Video
Job description
About the role
You design and implement real-time services that meet strict throughput, latency, and reliability targets, then verify, deploy, and operationalize them in production. You collaborate closely with stakeholders to understand customer needs and translate them into simple, scalable solutions for the Voice channel. You use written communication to align with leads, architects, and cross-functional partners, and you apply critical evaluation of AI-generated code to ensure correctness, security, performance, and maintainability while scaling a globally distributed platform.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Conduct risk assessments for real-time media services, then design and implement solutions that satisfy high throughput, low latency, and media fidelity requirements while verifying, deploying, and operationalizing them in production.
- Partner with product, support, and business stakeholders to clarify customer needs and translate them into simple, robust, and scalable solutions for the Voice channel.
- Synthesize requirements into detailed written communications and technical artifacts that help leads, architects, and cross-functional teams make informed decisions.
- Architect, review, and debug code across the JVM ecosystem, whether authored by you, teammates, or AI coding assistants such as Claude, GitHub Copilot, or Cursor.
- Build and maintain RESTful services, API design, and event-driven architectures using Kafka and SQS within CI/CD pipelines on AWS, GCP, Azure, and OpenStack.
- Participate in on-call rotations and incident response, using monitoring and alerting tools such as Prometheus, Datadog, and Grafana to maintain high availability.
- Apply critical evaluation to AI-generated code for correctness, security, performance, and maintainability, and document findings in technical formats.
- Explore novel ways to solve customer problems for the Voice channel, including scaling a complex distributed platform with points of presence globally.
- Demonstrate with metrics how you have used AI to increase productivity in designing, developing, and operating services.
- Contribute to SIP and Stir/Shaken protocol considerations where relevant within Twilio Voice Trust.
Requirements
- Minimum 2-3+ years of hands-on experience in a large scale, distributed applications environment on JVM based technologies.
- Experience building RESTful services, API design, and event-driven architectures using Kafka and SQS.
- Understanding of CI/CD pipelines and practices.
- Hands on experience with cloud infrastructures such as AWS, GCP, OpenStack, or Azure.
- Experience with on-call rotations, incident response, monitoring, and alerting tools including Prometheus, Datadog, and Grafana.
- Excellent written communication skills, essential for effective AI prompting and for creating clear technical documentation with or without AI assistance.
- Proven ability to critically evaluate AI-generated code for correctness, security, performance, and maintainability.
- Strong Java fundamentals with the ability to architect, review, and debug code authored by you, teammates, or AI agents.
- Demonstrated proficiency working with AI coding assistants such as Claude, GitHub Copilot, or Cursor, and the ability to describe workflows and show examples.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related engineering field.
- Strong Computer Science fundamentals including data structures, algorithms, operating systems, and distributed systems.
- Ability to work effectively in a team setting while being highly motivated and motivating to others.
Nice to have
- Can demonstrate with metrics how you have used AI to increase productivity.
- Experience scaling data tiers employing a variety of SQL/NoSQL database and caching technologies.
- Hands on experience scaling production backend systems, with the proven ability to design and develop horizontally-scalable, resilient and performing-under-load systems.
- Knowledge of and experience working with SIP protocol.
- Knowledge and experience working with Stir/Shaken protocol.
