Senior Software Engineer, Backend
Job description
About the role
This role centers on building and operating backend systems for consumer credit products. You will join a product or infrastructure team to deliver scalable, reliable solutions that support a remote-first environment with regular in-person collaboration.
Software engineers turn product ideas into working code. Engineers work in small teams, review each other's work, and ship in small batches. Most teams follow agile practices such as sprints and daily standups. Engineers also write tests, fix bugs, and improve performance. The field values clear communication as much as technical skill. Engineers spend part of every week on planning, code review, and debugging, not just writing new code. The ability to explain a technical decision in plain words separates strong engineers from the rest.
Key facts
What you'll do
Consumer-facing products gain reliability as backend systems are scaled to serve millions of customers. Instant, seamless user and partner experiences are delivered through refined APIs. Technical discussions, code reviews, and roadmap planning guide solution design and shape future capabilities. Deployed services operate with higher code quality, stronger security, and improved operational excellence through continuous improvement. Knowledge is shared, peers are mentored, and engineering best practices are advanced so the technical culture evolves. Regular company offsites connect a remote-first workforce, and travel for these offsites is expected at least two times per year.
Requirements
Production backend systems are built and maintained with a minimum of three years of experience. Distributed services are built using .NET (C#) or similar frameworks. Consumer-facing products that move significant transaction volumes are scaled by engineers who have done this before. Inclusive problem-solvers who value feedback and continuous learning thrive in this environment. AI-powered development tools such as Cursor, Augment, and Factory are leveraged to boost productivity, code quality, and collaboration.
Practical notes
Tilt operates as a remote-first company with scheduled offsites that require travel at least twice yearly. Team members collaborate across multiple time zones in 14 countries, requiring coordination and flexibility. Typical interview steps
Hiring for engineering roles usually starts with a recruiter screen, followed by one or two technical rounds. Candidates often solve a coding problem, discuss past projects, and answer system design questions. Some loops include a take-home task. Final rounds typically cover team fit and give candidates a chance to ask questions. Interviewers look for how you break down an unfamiliar problem, not just whether you reach the answer. Practicing a few problems aloud and reviewing your own past projects are the best preparation.
Good to know
Backend systems and APIs power credit decisioning and payments in this role. Machine learning models evaluate real-time financial signals that extend beyond traditional credit scores. Team members work across many countries and time zones within a virtual-first culture. Engineering growth is driven by impact and contributions rather than rigid timelines. The environment emphasizes direct visibility to leadership and inclusive collaboration.
Questions to ask
Useful questions for the interview: what a typical week looks like, how work is assigned, what tools the team uses, and how feedback works. Asking how the role has changed recently and what the team wishes it had known when joining is also reasonable. Questions about the manager's priorities are especially valued.
Career growth
Engineering careers usually progress from individual contributor to senior, staff, and principal levels. Some engineers move into management and lead teams of five to twenty people. Others stay on the technical track. Growth follows demonstrated impact, not tenure alone. A typical engineering ladder has clear levels with defined expectations for scope, quality, and mentorship. Moving up usually requires owning outcomes end to end rather than completing assigned tickets.
