About the role
The New York Times is seeking a Senior Product Designer, Growth to join a focused initiative that shapes the future of subscription acquisition and retention through digital products. This role owns the end-to-end design of high-impact experiments within the subscription funnel, collaborating closely with data scientists and growth marketers to validate hypotheses and iterate on solutions. The hire will be responsible for defining and evangelizing design standards that balance editorial integrity with commercial objectives across web and native app experiences. You will partner directly with the Product Design Director of Growth to translate business goals into intuitive user journeys that feel authentic to Times journalism. This position is embedded within a cross-functional pod that owns key metrics such as conversion, activation, and long-term subscriber loyalty. You will play a critical role in ensuring that every touchpoint in the user path communicates the value and trust inherent in The Times's brand. This is a temporary, hybrid role that requires deep collaboration with an distributed team operating in a fast-paced newsroom environment.

What you'll do
Lead the design of subscription acquisition flows, optimizing each step from awareness to checkout through iterative experimentation and user research.
Partner with data analysts to interpret behavioral insights, turning quantitative findings into qualitative understanding that informs design decisions.
Develop and maintain design systems and reusable components that ensure consistency across the subscription journey on both web and mobile platforms.
Translate complex editorial and business requirements into clear user flows, wireframes, and interactive prototypes that align stakeholders.
Conduct usability testing of new subscription experiences, synthesizing feedback to refine interactions and reduce friction in the funnel.
Collaborate with engineers to ensure design implementations preserve intent, paying close attention to edge cases and responsive behaviors.
Mentor junior designers by providing constructive feedback, establishing best practices, and elevating the overall quality of design deliverables.
Work cross-functionally with marketing, product, and editorial teams to ensure that all customer touchpoints uphold the value of journalistic independence.
Champion accessibility and inclusive design principles so that subscription experiences are usable for a broad and diverse audience.
Contribute to the long-term design vision for growth products, identifying opportunities to differentiate The Times through thoughtful, user-centered solutions.
Document design decisions and rationale to create a clear record that supports future iterations and handoffs to other teams.
Engage with emerging LLM tooling such as Claude, Cursor, Gemini Canvas, or FigmaMake to accelerate prototyping and exploration.
Support the creation of narratives that connect user needs to business outcomes, helping stakeholders understand the impact of design changes.
Act as a design leader in meetings and workshops, facilitating alignment and ensuring that user perspectives remain central to discussions.
Requirements
You must have a portfolio of work that showcases your design process along with finished design work demonstrating your ability to handle complex digital products.
You must bring a minimum of 5 years of professional experience designing digital web or app products, with a proven track record of delivering high-quality outcomes.
You must have substantial experience designing complex user journeys, specifically involving subscription models, paywalls, or e-commerce funnels that drive conversion.
You must be proficient in industry-standard design tools such as Figma, and demonstrate strong attention to detail and systematized thinking.
You must be proficient in LLM tooling such as Claude, Cursor, Gemini Canvas, or FigmaMake, using these technologies to enhance your design workflow.
You must have experience facilitating alignment through workshopping, brainstorms, and cross-functional collaboration with diverse stakeholders.
You must demonstrate a deep respect for and understanding of the value of journalistic independence, aligning your design work with The Times's mission.
