The Senior Manager, Travel and Event Security will lead the strategic development and operational execution of global travel safety and event security programs for The New York Times. This role operates with a high degree of independence, bridging executive strategy with on-the-ground execution in a fast-paced, mission-driven media environment. You will standardize security frameworks across the enterprise while collaborating closely with protective services, newsroom, and events teams. The position requires proactive risk management and direct support for high-profile operations. You will work in a hybrid capacity based in New York City or Washington, D.C. This role involves significant domestic and international travel to ensure safety at events and during assignments worldwide.

What you'll do

Develop, scale, and maintain a standardized global travel and event security framework across The New York Times enterprise.

Collaborate with internal teams to design and implement security policies aligned with the company's Responsibility of Care commitments.

Coordinate, train, and manage high-performing third-party security vendors to ensure compliance with service-level agreements and budget parameters.

Monitor emerging geopolitical threats, technological advancements, and industry best practices to evolve the security program continuously.

Lead security operations for major internal and external NYT events with direct on-site supervision.

Conduct pre-event site walkthroughs and partner with marketing, events, and newsroom leads to design customized security, emergency response, and evacuation plans.

Serve as the primary liaison between NYT, venue management, private security vendors, and local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.

Plan and manage specialized security support for VIPs, high-profile speakers, talent, and government officials attending NYT events.

Develop and promote a comprehensive travel security program to ensure all global staff are trained, informed, and equipped for safe corporate travel.

Partner with the Global Security Operations Center (GSOC) to leverage real-time intelligence and build risk-rating models for monitoring global events.

Standardize operational workflows and coordination with the High-Risk Travel Team to support journalists deploying to complex environments.

Establish robust emergency protocols, in-country emergency response capabilities, and clear communication plans for traveling personnel.

Implement structured training and awareness programs to educate staff on travel risks, security procedures, and incident reporting requirements.

Maintain detailed operational documentation and after-action review processes to support continuous improvement and organizational learning.

Support proactive business continuity planning to minimize operational disruption during security incidents or crises.

Requirements

Demonstrated experience in travel security, event security, or protective services within a corporate, executive, or media environment.

Strong understanding of global threat landscapes, including terrorism, civil unrest, cybersecurity risks, and natural hazards.

Proven ability to manage complex security programs and third-party vendor relationships simultaneously.

Excellent risk assessment, analytical, and strategic planning skills with a detail-oriented approach to operational execution.

Strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively coordinate with senior leadership, security teams, and external stakeholders.

Ability to travel domestically and internationally on short notice, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as required by operational needs.

Commitment to upholding The New York Times standards for safety, integrity, and responsibility in all security operations.

Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship for this role.
