About the role
The is a specialized technical position focused on the end-user hardware of the Lightspeed network. This role provides a direct contribution to the development and validation lifecycle of satellite user terminals. You will join the dedicated User Terminal Segment team, working in close collaboration with experienced engineers to refine sub-system designs and develop software-driven technical solutions. A core component of this role is performing theoretical analysis to support critical engineering decisions related to hardware performance and integration. The position encompasses the entire test preparation lifecycle, from initial concept and design verification through to the creation of comprehensive documentation. You will be responsible for building and managing laboratory test environments that facilitate rigorous validation and testing protocols. The role requires close collaboration with cross-functional teams to ensure user terminal objectives are met efficiently and on schedule. Ultimately, you will present your project outcomes and findings to management at the conclusion of your term, demonstrating the tangible impact of your contributions to the project's success.
What you'll do
- Assist with the design and verification of User Terminal hardware and software, ensuring alignment with project specifications.
- Conduct theoretical analysis to support engineering decisions, including performance modeling and system optimization.
- Write and maintain software using Python, C++, or other relevant programming languages for testing and operational purposes.
- Create and run automation scripts for testing purposes to improve efficiency and test coverage.
- Gather and interpret data from simulations and physical tests to identify trends and validate performance.
- Prepare detailed documentation, including test procedures, test plans, and comprehensive final reports for stakeholder review.
- Build and manage laboratory test environments, including the setup, configuration, and maintenance of test benches and equipment.
- Present your project outcomes and findings to management at the conclusion of your term, showcasing the impact of your contributions.
- Support the integration of new features by validating performance against predefined requirements and system benchmarks.
- Troubleshoot anomalies observed during laboratory testing and propose corrective actions to resolve issues efficiently.
- Collaborate with senior engineers to iterate on design improvements based on empirical test data and analysis.
- Develop and execute test cases that ensure the reliability, robustness, and functionality of user terminal components.
- Monitor industry trends and advancements to identify potential improvements for terminal hardware and software architectures.
- Maintain detailed records of all testing activities, results, and adjustments to ensure traceability and compliance.
Requirements
- Currently in your 2nd or 3rd year of a Bachelor degree in a technical or engineering discipline, such as electrical, computer, or software engineering.
- Demonstrated interest in satellite communications, modem design, antenna systems, and RF hardware components, including power amplifiers, LNAs, and converters.
- Solid understanding of modulation schemes and wireless transmission concepts fundamental to satellite communication systems.
- Familiarity with the satellite communications industry, including key technologies, standards, and market trends.
- Ability to communicate effectively in a hybrid workplace, balancing remote and in-office collaboration with team members.
- Proficiency in written and spoken English to clearly articulate technical concepts and document processes.
- Eligibility to work in Canada without sponsorship, ensuring compliance with employment regulations.
- Active enrollment in a Co-op program at a recognized post-secondary institution, in good academic standing.
- Availability to commit to the full duration of the co-op placement as outlined by the academic program and Telesat requirements.
- Capability to work independently with initiative and as part of a team in a fast-paced, dynamic engineering environment.
- Willingness to adhere to strict documentation and version control standards to maintain project integrity and traceability.
- Access to reliable transportation for the Ottawa location to facilitate attendance and laboratory access.
- Commitment to maintaining a safe and secure work environment in strict compliance with Telesat policies and procedures.
- Openness to receiving feedback and using it to improve technical and professional skills throughout the co-op term.
