Staff Accountant
Job description
About the role
This Staff Accountant role owns the mechanics that keep every dollar Tapcheck moves accurately recorded. You will be responsible for ensuring that funds move correctly across multiple payment rails, banking partners, and revenue streams by maintaining rigorous month-end close and balance sheet integrity. The position requires you to treat every journal entry and reconciliation as a control point that must be clear, complete, and defensible. You will build the documentation and processes that define how Tapcheck does accounting today and scales reliably tomorrow. This role is positioned at the center of the finance function's evolution as the company moves toward greater automation and audit readiness. You will be expected to work independently on complex problems while collaborating closely with cross-functional partners to ensure ledger accuracy. The work you do will directly influence how leadership interprets financial results and how external stakeholders view the control environment.
Key facts
What you'll do
Take ownership of assigned month-end close areas, executing journal entries, accruals, prepaid schedules, and fixed asset activity with consistent attention to detail.
Perform balance sheet reconciliations that drill down to source-level variances, resolving items fully instead of deferring them in future periods.
Review and analyze high-volume cash movements and settlement activity across multiple banking partners and payment rails to ensure alignment between operational activity and ledger balances.
Leverage FloQast to execute close tasks on schedule, producing supporting documentation that is organized, transparent, and ready for review.
Develop clear flux analysis that explains financial movement in plain business language, linking drivers in transactions to impacts in the financial statements.
Own the revenue close for assigned product lines, capturing transaction-level revenue recognition, calculating partner revenue shares, and maintaining accurate deferred revenue schedules.
Validate that billing and invoicing activity aligns with recognized revenue and cash collections, investigating timing differences and inconsistencies promptly.
Maintain detailed trade receivable aging and collaborate with business teams on collections follow-up to support cash flow and revenue integrity.
Test and verify that revenue data flowing from operational systems into the general ledger is complete and accurate, driving fixes at the source when breaks are identified.
Support revenue recognition analysis for new products, pricing structures, and partner agreements, ensuring policies are applied consistently and disclosures are accurate.
Document every process you run, including desk procedures, control descriptions, and reconciliation templates, so that another person can execute the work without additional guidance.
Prepare audit schedules and respond to external auditor requests by delivering complete, well-supported workpapers that reflect the true state of accounts.
Identify manual workarounds and control weaknesses, then propose sustainable fixes that eliminate risk rather than temporarily routing around it.
Partner with Payment Operations, Product, and Engineering to understand how transactions behave in the business systems before they impact the ledger.
Communicate confidently with FP&A, business partners, and leadership by presenting numbers you can explain and defend with evidence.
Raise issues early in the close process so that problems are solved in the first days rather than explained at the final deadline.
Requirements
Bring a minimum of 5 years of accounting experience from public accounting, high-growth private companies, or a combination of both.
Have owned month-end close areas end to end, managing journal entries, reconciliations, and variance explanation from start to finish.
Have prepared balance sheet reconciliations for high-volume, high-transaction accounts where timing and accuracy are critical.
Have worked through revenue accounting mechanics, including recognition timing, deferred revenue, and reconciliation between billing and revenue.
Have supported an external audit by preparing schedules, testing controls, and responding directly to auditor inquiries.
Have built or rebuilt a process that was previously manual, undocumented, or unreliable, improving reliability through structure and documentation.
Apply a working knowledge of US GAAP to real transaction-level decisions, not only to theoretical concepts or academic examples.
Operate with accuracy and urgency in a fast-moving environment where close deadlines do not move and last-minute adjustments are common.
Hold a bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field as the foundation for your technical accounting knowledge.
Be legally authorized to work in the United States without requiring employment-based visa sponsorship now or in the future.
Nice to have
Hold a CPA or be actively progressing toward CPA certification through examination and experience requirements.
Have worked in fintech, payments, payroll, or another environment with complex money movement and multi-party settlement flows.
Have used Workday Financials, NetSuite, or a comparable ERP, alongside a close management tool such as FloQast or BlackLine in prior roles.
Have reconciled activity across multiple banking partners, processors, or payment rails as part of daily or monthly close.
Have been through a company's first or second external audit and understand what audit ready documentation and evidence actually requires.
Demonstrate strong proficiency in Excel, and feel comfortable using SQL or BI tools to validate data at scale and resolve discrepancies.
