AI Platform Engineer

About the role

We are seeking a talented engineer to join our team and take charge of developing the foundational execution engine for Supabase's internal AI systems. In this position, you will be responsible for creating a platform that drives AI agents, ensuring they operate reliably, safely, and have a measurable impact throughout the organization.

What you'll do

• Design and implement a production-ready agent platform that includes an event-driven queue, a versatile model runtime, and persistent state management for tasks that may be interrupted, along with human review checkpoints and detailed logging for all operations.
• Develop and oversee an evaluation framework that incorporates automated checks and balances to guarantee the trustworthiness of agents prior to their deployment.
• Build and integrate a diverse range of AI agents that can perform various functions, such as generating reports, drafting content, triaging issues, and providing answers to queries, as well as agents that monitor and enhance the platform's performance.
• Integrate governance rules directly into the system's architecture, ensuring that risk tiers, credential limitations, and operational boundaries are enforced to prevent unauthorized actions.
• Design the communication protocols for interactions between the system and users, prioritizing efficient and unobtrusive communication methods.
• Continuously maintain and enhance the platform's tooling, which includes compilers, validators, and distribution mechanisms, to ensure optimal performance.
• Develop a comprehensive system to assess the operational performance of the platform and quantify the value generated by agent activities.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand their needs and ensure that the AI agents are aligned with business objectives and user requirements.
• Troubleshoot and resolve any issues that arise within the AI platform, ensuring minimal disruption to operations.
• Stay updated with the latest advancements in AI technology and apply relevant insights to improve the platform continuously.
• Document processes and systems thoroughly to facilitate knowledge sharing and onboarding of new team members.

Requirements

• Demonstrated experience in deploying production-level LLM agent systems that have been relied upon for operational use, including a history of incident resolution.
• Strong expertise in creating and implementing evaluation strategies, such as golden sets, behavioral assertions, and continuous integration gates, rather than relying on ad-hoc checks.
• Extensive experience with deep API integrations into core operational systems and the development of MCP servers, with a solid understanding of their potential failure points.
• Proven end-to-end ownership of infrastructure on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) using Python, encompassing provisioning, deployment, monitoring, and rollback processes through infrastructure as code, along with experience in managing a cloud warehouse.
• A keen understanding of how software should interact with human users, valuing each communication as a critical resource.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently in a remote environment.

Nice to have

• Contributions to the AI agent community, such as open-source frameworks, MCP servers, or notable publications on agent reliability.
• Familiarity with LLM observability, cost tracking, and the development of reporting pipelines from raw log data.
• A history of creating internal platforms that have been embraced by non-engineers, with insights into user-driven enhancements.
