About the role
Studiowildcard is seeking a talented Technical Artist to join our dynamic team. This position offers the flexibility of working remotely or on-site in our Redmond, Washington office. As a Technical Artist, you will bridge the gap between art and engineering, ensuring that our artistic vision is realized while maintaining optimal performance in our games. You will collaborate closely with artists and developers to create visually stunning and technically sound assets, enhancing the overall player experience.

What you'll do
- Collaborate with artists and developers to establish best practices for asset creation and implementation, ensuring a seamless workflow between art and code.
- Develop and maintain shaders, materials, and visual effects that align with the artistic direction of our projects.
- Optimize 3D models, textures, and animations for performance across various platforms, ensuring that visual fidelity is maintained without sacrificing frame rates.
- Create and manage technical documentation that outlines processes, tools, and workflows for the art team, facilitating knowledge sharing and onboarding.
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to art assets, providing solutions that enhance both the visual quality and performance of our games.
- Assist in the development of tools and scripts that streamline the asset creation pipeline, improving efficiency for the art team.
- Conduct regular reviews of art assets to ensure they meet quality standards and are optimized for performance, providing constructive feedback to artists.
- Stay up-to-date with industry trends and emerging technologies, integrating new techniques and tools into the production pipeline as appropriate.
- Participate in team meetings and contribute to brainstorming sessions, providing insights and ideas that enhance the creative process.
- Mentor junior artists and provide guidance on technical aspects of art production, fostering a culture of learning and collaboration within the team.
- Collaborate with QA to identify and resolve visual bugs, ensuring a polished final product for our players.
- Engage with the community and gather feedback on visual elements, using insights to inform future iterations and improvements.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Art, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent experience in the gaming industry.
- A minimum of 3 years of experience as a Technical Artist or in a similar role within the video game industry.
- Proficiency in industry-standard software such as Maya, Blender, Unity, or Unreal Engine, with a strong understanding of their workflows.
- Solid understanding of 3D graphics principles, including modeling, texturing, rigging, and animation.
- Experience with shader programming and visual effects creation using tools like Shader Graph or HLSL.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot technical issues effectively.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to non-technical team members.
Nice to have
- Experience with version control systems, such as Git or Perforce, for asset management.
- Familiarity with scripting languages like Python or C# to automate processes and enhance workflows.
- Knowledge of performance profiling tools and techniques to optimize game assets.
- Previous experience in a leadership or mentorship role within a creative team.
- Passion for gaming and a strong understanding of game design principles.
- Contributions to open-source projects or a portfolio showcasing innovative technical art solutions.
