Staff Engineer, Agentic Commerce
Job description
About the role
Stripe is building the infrastructure to enable AI agents to conduct commerce securely and reliably. As a founding engineer in Singapore, you will lead the technical strategy for agentic commerce within the APAC region. In this capacity, you will be responsible for defining the long-term vision that ensures our systems can handle autonomous decision-making at scale. You will act as the primary technical authority, translating abstract product goals into concrete, executable plans that align with Stripe's global standards. Your work will directly influence how commerce interactions are orchestrated between AI entities and payment infrastructure across multiple markets. You will be expected to anticipate future challenges and architect solutions that are both robust and adaptable to evolving agent capabilities. This role requires a balance of deep technical execution and strategic foresight to ensure our platform remains a leader in the emerging agentic commerce landscape.

- Evaluate and integrate emerging AI agent frameworks and autonomous protocol standards to maintain a competitive edge in commerce automation.
- Establish monitoring and diagnostic frameworks that provide deep visibility into agent workflows, enabling rapid resolution of production issues.
- Drive the definition of success metrics for agentic commerce features, using data to iterate on both product experience and system performance.
- Ensure all technical solutions adhere to Stripe's global security policies and compliance requirements for financial services in the region.
- Facilitate cross-functional workshops to align engineering, product, and operations teams on technical dependencies and interface contracts.
- Promote the adoption of infrastructure tools that enhance developer productivity and reduce the time-to-market for new agentic capabilities.

- Demonstrated experience leading technical projects for complex, customer-facing platforms where system failure has significant business impact.
- Proven ability to analyze intricate technical tradeoffs and make informed decisions despite incomplete information or shifting requirements.
- A strong track record of successfully delivering projects in distributed or remote team environments, often across multiple time zones.
- Exceptional written communication skills, enabling effective collaboration with colleagues and partners asynchronously and without reliance on real-time interaction.
- Direct experience engaging with customers and stakeholders to gather requirements, resolve conflicts, and build long-term trust.
- Hands-on proficiency with modern AI development tools, leveraging them for code generation, debugging, and workflow optimization in daily tasks.
- A history of influencing engineering and business decisions across cross-functional organizations without relying on direct managerial authority.
- Solid understanding of financial services technology landscapes, including the challenges associated with regulated transactional systems.
- Commitment to maintaining a high degree of professionalism and reliability, even when operating with minimal direct supervision.
- Willingness to travel occasionally to meet with key partners and represent Stripe's technical vision in person.
- Availability to work during overlapping business hours with other major global time zones to ensure effective collaboration.
Nice to have
- Background in fintech, payments, or commerce infrastructure with a focus on high-availability systems.
- Experience developing products specifically for the APAC market, taking into account local user behaviors and regulatory nuances.
- Familiarity with AI agents, LLM-based applications, or frameworks governing autonomous transaction protocols.
- A history of launching early-stage products from initial concept through to widespread market adoption and product maturity.
- Prior experience as a founding engineer in a team where you helped define culture, processes, and technical direction from the ground up.
Practical notes
