Staff Software Engineer, Stripe Dashboard
Job description
About the role
You will define the technical strategy for merchant-facing experiences across Stripe, concentrating on quality, performance, and the thoughtful integration of AI into core user workflows. You will lead the design and delivery of complex, cross-team initiatives that measurably improve the reliability, responsiveness, and polish of Stripe merchant surfaces. You will champion a quality-first engineering culture by establishing standards, tooling, and processes that make it easy to ship high-quality, performant UI by default. You will drive performance as a product feature, owning the technical approach to making the Dashboard and merchant tools best-in-class in speed and responsiveness, including instrumentation, budgets, and architectural improvements. You will innovate on the future of merchant UX by exploring and prototyping how AI can transform the way merchants discover, configure, and operate Stripe products, moving beyond traditional dashboard paradigms. You will build platforms and abstractions that make Stripe engineers more productive, creating frameworks, components, and developer tools that encode best practices for quality and performance. You will partner across Stripe with Product, Design, AI and ML, and infrastructure teams to translate high-level product vision into a concrete technical roadmap, while mentoring and growing engineers across the organization to raise the technical bar and foster a culture of craftsmanship and high standards.
Key facts
What you'll do
Define technical strategy for merchant-facing experiences across Stripe, with a focus on quality, performance, and the integration of AI into core user workflows.
Lead the design and delivery of complex, cross-team projects that measurably improve the reliability, responsiveness, and polish of Stripe merchant surfaces.
Champion a quality-first engineering culture - establish standards, tooling, and processes that make it easy to ship high-quality, performant UI by default.
Drive performance as a product feature - own the technical approach to making the Dashboard and merchant tools best-in-class in speed and responsiveness, including instrumentation, budgets, and architectural improvements.
Innovate on the future of merchant UX - explore and prototype how AI can transform the way merchants discover, configure, and operate Stripe products, moving beyond traditional dashboard paradigms.
Build platforms and abstractions that make Stripe engineers more productive - frameworks, components, and developer tools that encode best practices for quality and performance.
Partner across Stripe with Product, Design, AI and ML, and infrastructure teams to translate high-level product vision into a concrete technical roadmap.
Mentor and grow engineers across the organization, raising the technical bar and fostering a culture of craftsmanship and high standards.
Evaluate and refine existing workflows and user journeys to identify friction points and opportunities for optimization at scale.
Collaborate closely with designers to ensure that implemented experiences match the intended design system and behavioral nuances across edge cases.
Investigate and prototype new interaction models and input modalities to expand how merchants interact with complex financial workflows.
Own end-to-end delivery of critical merchant features, coordinating dependencies and ensuring timely, high-quality releases.
Establish clear hypotheses and success metrics for experiments, using data to inform iterative improvements and long-term product decisions.
Contribute to the broader engineering community by sharing patterns, learnings, and best practices through internal documentation and cross-team discussions.
Requirements
This is a Senior Staff role - the expected scope of this role includes overseeing the work of 4-6 teams and owning an entire portfolio of products - and while there's no strict minimum we're looking for, most candidates will have at least 10-15 years of experience in the industry.
Experience building and shipping complex, user-facing web applications that have reached large-scale audiences (hundreds of thousands of users) or have been contributed to by hundreds of engineers.
A track record of leading large-scale, cross-functional engineering projects with broad organizational impact.
Deep expertise in modern frontend and full-stack development - you have strong opinions on what makes a great user experience and the technical skills to make it real.
Demonstrated ability to drive measurable improvements in software quality and performance (e.g., load times, reliability, test coverage, error rates).
Experience influencing technical direction and driving alignment across multiple teams without formal authority.
A history of mentoring and elevating engineers, raising the technical bar, and fostering a culture of craftsmanship and high standards.
Comfort operating in environments with ambiguity and competing priorities, while maintaining a bias for action and clear communication.
