About the role
Akoustis, a subsidiary of SpaceX, is seeking a dedicated BAW Filter Design Engineer to join the Starlink team and contribute to the expansion of global connectivity. In this role, you will own the full design lifecycle of bulk acoustic wave filters, ensuring they meet the stringent performance and reliability standards required for satellite communication systems. You will be responsible for translating complex system requirements into robust filter designs that enable seamless RF performance in a demanding space environment. The position requires close collaboration with cross-functional teams to align filter development with the broader objectives of the Starlink network and Akoustis technology roadmap. You will leverage advanced simulation and measurement techniques to solve challenging electromagnetic and mechanical packaging problems. Success in this role depends on your ability to manage multiple design iterations while maintaining clear documentation and communication. You will play a critical role in advancing the manufacturability and performance of RF front-end components that directly impact the quality of service for end users.

What you'll do
- Lead the end-to-end development of BAW filters from initial concept through production, ensuring alignment with project timelines and performance targets.
- Execute electromagnetic simulations using industry-standard tools to refine filter designs and verify that they are manufacturable at scale.
- Design RF modules by integrating filters with antennas, switches, and amplifiers to optimize system-level performance and minimize signal interference.
- Improve key filter metrics such as bandwidth, insertion loss, return loss, and rejection levels through iterative design and analysis.
- Collaborate closely with layout designers and process engineers to ensure seamless integration of filters into larger satellite communication systems.
- Conduct rigorous RF measurements and validation tests using network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, and related test equipment to confirm design integrity.
- Document all design results, simulation data, and test outcomes in detail to support smooth production handoffs and future design reviews.
- Support troubleshooting activities for any performance deviations observed during prototype or flight model testing phases.
- Participate in design reviews and provide technical justification for design choices based on simulation and measurement evidence.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of BAW technology trends and related standards relevant to space-based RF systems.
Requirements
- Hold a Bachelor degree in electrical engineering or a related engineering field from an accredited institution.
- Possess a minimum of 1 year of professional experience in communication systems, RF, or antenna engineering, which may include relevant internships or extracurricular projects.
- Demonstrate proficiency with electromagnetic simulation software such as CST, HFSS, ADS, or COMSOL for designing and analyzing RF components.
- Have hands-on experience with vector signal generators, network analyzers, and spectrum analyzers to perform characterization and validation tasks.
- Show ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and datasheets with attention to technical detail.
- Must be capable of working effectively in a fast-paced engineering environment with frequent shifts in priorities.
- Must be eligible for security clearance as required by U.S. government contracts, which may involve U.S. citizenship verification.
- Must comply with all SpaceX and Akoustis policies regarding safety, quality, and documentation standards.
Nice to have
- Hold a Master degree or PhD in electrical engineering with a focus on RF or antenna design, demonstrating advanced theoretical knowledge.
- Bring background in IoT, Wi-Fi, or 5G front-end module development to apply proven design practices to new challenges.
- Show understanding of MEMS fabrication processes and how they impact the yield and performance of BAW filter production.
- Have experience with mixed-signal design and analog or digital co-simulation to address complex system interactions.
- Demonstrate ability to use Python or MATLAB for automating testing procedures, data analysis, and simulation workflows.
- Show familiarity with quality assurance processes and statistical methods for characterizing component performance.
