About the role
SpaceX is seeking a Senior BAW Filter Design Engineer to join its Akoustis subsidiary located in Bastrop, Texas. In this pivotal role, you will play a crucial part in the development of high-performance RF filters that are integral to the Starlink satellite constellation, utilizing advanced XBAW technology. What you'll do
- Oversee the entire lifecycle of BAW filters, from the initial design phase through to production, ensuring a comprehensive approach that includes architecture, simulation, and performance characterization.
- Conduct electromagnetic (EM) simulations to refine and optimize designs, ensuring compliance with manufacturing standards and performance requirements.
- Design RF modules that integrate filters with other components such as switches, amplifiers, and antennas, paying close attention to layout and packaging for optimal performance.
- Evaluate and balance key performance metrics, including insertion loss, bandwidth, and rejection, while also considering cost and size constraints.
- Collaborate closely with system architects and process engineers to ensure seamless integration of components into larger RF systems, enhancing overall functionality.
- Validate the performance of filters using advanced RF measurement tools, including network and spectrum analyzers, and prepare detailed technical documentation for design reviews and assessments.
- Stay updated on industry trends and advancements in RF filter technology to continually enhance design methodologies and product performance.
- Participate in cross-functional teams to address challenges and propose innovative solutions that drive project success and efficiency.
Requirements
- A bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a closely related engineering discipline is required.
- At least 5 years of hands-on experience in RF filter design, with a specific focus on BAW or SAW technologies.
- Proficiency in using EM simulation software, such as HFSS, CST, ADS, or COMSOL, to support design and analysis efforts.
- Practical experience with RF measurement tools, including vector signal generators, network analyzers, and spectrum analyzers, is essential.
- Willingness to work weekends and extended hours as needed to meet project deadlines and deliverables.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Nice to have
- A master's degree or PhD in electrical engineering, particularly with a specialization in RF or antenna design, is highly desirable.
- Experience in designing RF front-end modules for applications such as IoT, Wi-Fi, or 5G technologies.
- Familiarity with MEMS fabrication processes as they relate to BAW filter technology would be advantageous.
- Previous experience in mixed-signal design and analog/digital circuit co-simulation is a plus.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python or MATLAB for automating testing and simulation processes.
Skills & tools
- Expertise in BAW/SAW filter design methodologies.
- Proficient in electromagnetic simulation tools (HFSS, ADS, COMSOL, CST).
- Familiarity with RF testing equipment, including network and spectrum analyzers.
