Senior PHP & Symfony Software Engineer, (Remote, Full-Time)
Job description
About the role
This position is for a seasoned backend engineer who will take full ownership of designing, building, and maintaining critical backend systems using PHP and the Symfony framework. You will be responsible for translating complex business requirements into robust, scalable, and secure software solutions that power high-impact products. The role demands a strong commitment to engineering excellence, where your code will be scrutinized not just for functionality but for maintainability, performance, and long-term sustainability. You will act as a technical leader within an Agile team, guiding technical discussions, influencing architecture decisions, and ensuring best practices are followed consistently. Success in this role means building systems that are not only correct today but can evolve gracefully tomorrow without unnecessary friction. You will collaborate closely with product managers, QA engineers, and fellow developers to ensure that every release meets the highest standards of quality and reliability. This is a role for someone who takes pride in their craft, embraces accountability, and wants to see their work serve real users in production environments every single day.
Key facts
What you'll do
Architect and implement new backend features and services using PHP and the Symfony framework, ensuring alignment with clean architecture principles and long-term maintainability.
Lead the technical design of complex systems, breaking down ambiguous requirements into well-defined components, interfaces, and integration points that are easy to reason about.
Write clean, testable, and well-documented code while actively promoting Test-Driven Development practices to increase confidence in releases and reduce production incidents.
Perform in-depth code reviews, provide constructive feedback, and mentor junior developers to elevate the overall quality and consistency of the engineering team.
Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to refine ticket definitions, acceptance criteria, and technical specifications, ensuring alignment before implementation begins.
Integrate with third-party APIs and internal services, diagnosing issues, optimizing communication patterns, and improving resilience through timeouts, retries, and fallbacks.
Monitor application behavior in production, investigate incidents, analyze logs, and work closely with operations to implement fixes and preventative improvements.
Champion software craftsmanship by identifying technical debt, proposing refactoring efforts, and driving initiatives that improve performance, scalability, and security over time.
Contribute to the full delivery pipeline, from local development and testing environments through CI/CD workflows, automated testing, and safe production deployments.
Act as a technical partner to product and QA teams, helping to clarify edge cases, identify risks, and ensure that shipped features meet expectations and adhere to defined quality standards.
Requirements
You must have proven professional experience with Symfony, with a strong portfolio or history of shipping production-grade applications using the framework.
Laravel-only experience is explicitly not qualifying for this role, and any background centered primarily on Laravel without substantial Symfony work will not be considered.
You should be comfortable working in a fully remote, asynchronous-first environment where written communication is clear, structured, and respectful.
A solid understanding of PHP internals, object-oriented design, and common design patterns is essential, along with the ability to apply them consistently in your daily work.
Experience with Test-Driven Development, unit testing, and integration testing in PHP is required, along with familiarity with testing tools and frameworks in the Symfony ecosystem.
You must be disciplined in writing maintainable code, including proper naming, modular structure, and separation of concerns, so that future engineers can work with your code effortlessly.
Strong debugging skills are required, including the ability to reproduce issues locally, analyze stack traces, and use profiling tools to identify bottlenecks or misbehavior in the application.
You should be comfortable collaborating within an Agile workflow, participating in sprint planning, standups, retrospectives, and other ceremonies while continuously improving how the team delivers value.
Practical notes
This role is fully remote and available to candidates based in India, with no requirement for relocation or travel.
The engagement is full-time, and you are expected to integrate with a globally distributed team that operates in an asynchronous manner.
No specific working hours are mandated, but consistent availability during core collaboration windows is expected to ensure smooth communication and timely responses.
There is no sponsored travel or visa support mentioned for this position, and all employment terms are governed by local regulations and the policies of the client company.
Candidates should be prepared for a technically rigorous interview process that focuses on real-world Symfony experience, problem-solving ability, and engineering judgment.
The selection process may include code reviews, technical discussions, and practical exercises designed to assess how you approach complex backend challenges.
This position is ideal for self-motivated engineers who thrive in environments with high ownership, minimal micromanagement, and a focus on sustainable, long-term productivity rather than short-term output.
You will be joining a company that values long-term professional relationships, so the expectation is for a stable commitment to the role and active participation in the growth of the product and the team.
Because this is a remote-first role, you must have a reliable internet connection, a suitable workspace, and the discipline to manage your time effectively without direct supervision.
Strong written English is required, as a significant portion of communication will occur through documentation, tickets, and code reviews.
If you are passionate about building backend systems the right way and are ready to take on meaningful responsibility, this opportunity provides the environment and support needed to grow your skills over the long term.
