Staff Product Designer
SemgrepUSAFull Time2mo ago$205,000 - $250,000 USD
Job description
About the role
This role owns the end-to-end experience of Semgrep's platform, shaping what great security tooling looks and feels like across product areas. You will define intuitive and trustworthy interactions for deeply technical workflows including detection, remediation, and triage. You will influence both the product vision and the way design operates and scales within the company. You will partner closely with product managers and engineering leads to ground decisions in real user needs and behaviors. You will use AI tools as a core part of your design process when they meaningfully improve speed and quality. You will also build guidance and tools that enable non-designers to make better design decisions.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Own ambiguous cross-cutting design initiatives end-to-end, from problem framing and research through shipped outcomes.
- Partner closely with PM and engineering leads to shape roadmap direction and product strategy grounded in real user needs and behaviors.
- Design whole systems so that complex security workflows feel simple, intuitive, and trustworthy to users.
- Conduct and champion user research, sharing knowledge gained about users and their workflows through qualitative and quantitative signals like task success and time on task.
- Raise the quality bar through strong craft, clear thinking, thoughtful critique, and high standards for execution.
- Build guidance and tools that enable non-designers to make better design decisions and operate with confidence.
- Help shape how design scales at Semgrep as the team and product grow, defining processes and systems for collaboration.
- Use AI tools as a core part of how you design and build when they meaningfully improve speed or quality of outcomes.
- Reimagine the information architecture of the Semgrep app to better match user mental models as their workflows and the technology they use evolve.
- Evolve the core workflows of detection, triage, and remediation to be intuitive, trustworthy, and AI-powered, defining what "great" looks like for automated application security tooling.
- Shape and codify design system components so the broader team, and not just design, can self-serve with confidence.
- Work across product areas to define what great security tooling looks and feels like through tangible design outputs and decisions.
- Make technically complex concepts accessible and coherent through clear structure, language, and interaction design.
- Contribute to design processes that balance ambitious product goals with technical constraints and user realities.
Requirements
- Have 8+ years of product design experience working on complex digital products, ideally with exposure to developer tooling, security, or other technical enterprise products.
- Have led design on complex, cross-team initiatives with meaningful product and organizational impact.
- Be comfortable working closely with engineers and understanding technical systems in depth to ensure feasible and coherent design solutions.
- Use research, data, and customer conversations to inform decisions and validate design outcomes.
- Have the ability to balance systems thinking with attention to detail, and to iterate quickly while maintaining a high quality bar.
- Communicate clearly and bring structure to ambiguous problems, translating between stakeholders and teams.
- Have a genuine interest in making the designers around you better, demonstrated through mentoring and elevating the quality of work across the team.
- Be excited about using AI tools as part of your design and prototyping workflow and already have opinions about how to use these tools well to improve your process.
Nice to have
- Experience working within developer workflows and toolchains to understand how security tools fit into daily work.
- Familiarity with security concepts, vulnerability detection, and remediation patterns in application security.
- Experience contributing to or building design systems at scale.
- Experience using AI tools in creative workflows and understanding their limitations and strengths.
- Background in building or influencing product strategy in high-growth, technical organizations.
