Senior AI Software Engineer

About the role

You will architect and ship LLM powered features that make Semgrep smarter and more helpful for developers building secure software. You will partner closely with security researchers and product teams to translate real customer pain into AI workflows that run inside Semgrep's analysis engine. You will design prompts, fine tune models, and build evaluation harnesses that measure quality and safety in production traffic. You will own the full lifecycle of AI features from prototype to high scale service, ensuring reliability and a great developer experience. You will experiment rapidly, challenge assumptions, and iterate on solutions when requirements shift under pressure. You will communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, turning complex security constraints into understandable guidance. This role gives you ownership over one of the most critical parts of Semgrep's roadmap, where your work directly impacts how developers build and secure software.

What you'll do

Investigate novel LLM architectures and prompting strategies to improve Semgrep's detection accuracy and developer experience.

Design and implement production grade AI services in Python that integrate with Semgrep's backend and frontend workflows.

Run controlled experiments comparing multiple models, prompts, and retrieval strategies against real world code and security findings.

Collaborate with security researchers to incorporate expert knowledge into AI features such as vulnerability prioritization and fix suggestions.

Analyze large scale telemetry from Semgrep users to identify patterns that can be addressed with smarter AI assistance.

Build evaluation frameworks and dashboards that measure the impact of AI features on developer productivity and security outcomes.

Partner with product managers to scope AI powered capabilities that balance innovation with performance and reliability constraints.

Write clear documentation and technical guides so that other engineers can adopt and extend AI components safely.

Contribute to open source practices and internal tooling that make AI experimentation faster and more reproducible across teams.

Champion responsible AI usage by implementing safeguards, monitoring for regressions, and ensuring transparency in model behavior.

Requirements

You hold a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a closely related technical field.

You have professional experience building and deploying AI powered applications or large language models in production environments.

You are proficient in Python and have strong software engineering skills in building maintainable, testable systems.

You have hands on experience with modern LLMs such as GPT, Claude, or Codex, including prompt engineering and fine tuning techniques.

You understand distributed systems concepts and have worked with containerized services deployed on Kubernetes.

You have experience working with databases and query languages relevant to code analysis, such as SQL or similar stores.

You are comfortable working with web technologies such as TypeScript and React, even if they are not your primary expertise.

You have a strong grasp of security concepts and care deeply about improving the state of software security through code analysis.

Nice to have

Experience contributing to or building tools in the security or developer tooling space.

Familiarity with Semgrep or similar static analysis platforms.

Contributions to open source projects or published work in AI, security, or programming tools.

Practical notes

This is a hybrid role with the expectation you join us 3+ days per week in our San Francisco, New York, Boston or Denver offices depending on team. Remote employment will be considered for exceptional candidates as well.

This role is based in the United States and available to candidates authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship at this time.
