About the role
The Field Engineer, Data Engineer role at Scale AI is centered on enabling the company's government customers by translating complex operational requirements into robust, scalable data infrastructure solutions. You will own the design and implementation of data pipelines that securely connect customer environments with Scale's high-performance platform. A core responsibility is ensuring seamless bidirectional data synchronization between existing customer systems and Scale's infrastructure. You will deploy and maintain Scale software at customer sites while actively participating in engagements to uncover and address requirements. This position demands close collaboration with cross-functional teams to define and execute a clear vision for data pipelines and agent workflows. You will build backend systems that are reliable and robust enough to serve as standalone products for customers. Ultimately, your work will empower customers to accelerate their own AI ambitions by integrating Scale capabilities into their existing workflows. This role requires a willingness to work onsite in secured spaces and obtain necessary security clearances.
What you'll do
- Orchestrate and implement end-to-end data integrations that enable bidirectional syncing of customer data to Scale's platform and back.
- Deploy and maintain Scale software at customer sites, ensuring stable operation within secured environments.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define and execute the vision for data pipelines and agents in federal engagements.
- Develop customer-requested features while working closely with stakeholders to ensure solutions drive customer satisfaction and adoption.
- Build robust and reliable backend systems that function as standalone products to support customer AI initiatives.
- Participate actively in customer engagements, working closely with stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver innovative solutions.
- Support the implementation of data engineering processes including ETL to integrate diverse data sources efficiently.
- Maintain a track record of success as a hybrid customer-facing engineer capable of rapidly adapting to shifting roles and responsibilities.
- Leverage cloud-native technologies such as containerization and orchestration tools to enhance deployment and scalability.
- Utilize networking knowledge to optimize configurations for ports, protocols, and connectivity in customer environments.
- Employ strong Linux skills and shell scripting to manage operating systems and automate routine tasks.
- Apply rigorous problem-solving skills to analyze complex challenges and devise effective, critical solutions.
Requirements
This role requires at minimum an active Secret clearance and willingness to obtain a TS/SCI security clearance. You must possess a strong background in data engineering with knowledge of ETL processes and data pipeline development. Demonstrated experience building data integrations to process diverse data sources is essential. You must understand data modeling, data warehousing, and data governance principles as part of your daily work. A track record of success as a hybrid customer-facing engineer and forward-deployed software engineer is required. You must be able to quickly adapt to different roles and responsibilities in fast-paced environments. Prior experience developing with Python is mandatory for this position. Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, and GCP is required. Experience with containerization technologies like Docker and container orchestration such as Kubernetes is mandatory. Understanding of shell scripting and operating systems is necessary given the Linux-centric environment.
Compensation and location details

The base salary range for this full-time position in the locations of Hawaii, Washington DC, Texas, Colorado is:
$190,000

$290,000 USD
Compensation packages at Scale for eligible roles include base salary, equity, and benefits. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position and may be inclusive of several career levels at Scale; it will be determined during the interview process based on work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, qualifications, interview performance, and relevant education or training. Scale employees in eligible roles are also granted equity based compensation, subject to Board of Director approval.
