About the role

Render is actively constructing a modern cloud platform tailored for developers who are building AI-native applications, with a core mission to simplify infrastructure management so engineering teams can concentrate on building and scaling their products without unnecessary complexity. This specific role owns the strategic direction and future evolution of Render's datastores, placing a primary emphasis on the managed Postgres service that underpins many production workloads. The hire will act as the central product authority for data services, balancing the tension between foundational reliability improvements and the immediate demands of product growth and business objectives. You will define the long-term product roadmap for provisioning, lifecycle management, high availability, backups, scaling operations, and extension support for these database offerings. A critical part of your responsibility involves shaping how Postgres evolves to effectively support AI-native development patterns, including vector-based workloads and interactions with programmatic agents. You will establish clear best practices and intuitive abstractions that guide how developers interact with data on Render, ensuring the platform feels effortless for production use. This position requires close collaboration with engineering and design teams to influence the underlying technical architecture of the data layer, with a constant focus on maximizing durability, performance, and operational simplicity. Ultimately, your work will translate complex infrastructure challenges into coherent strategies that result on successful product launches which delight both internal teams and external customers.

What you'll do

• Define the strategic direction and product roadmap for Render's datastores, with a primary focus on Postgres, encompassing provisioning workflows, lifecycle management, high availability configurations, backup strategies, scaling mechanisms, and extension integrations.
• Guide investment priorities across data services, carefully weighing foundational reliability work against immediate product needs and business goals to ensure sustainable long-term architecture.
• Collaborate closely with engineering and other product teams to influence the technical architecture of our data layer, emphasizing durability, performance, and ease of operation for all stakeholders.
• Develop a clear perspective on how managed Postgres should evolve to support AI-native development, including optimizations for vector workloads and seamless interactions with programmatic agents.
• Establish best practices for how developers interact with data on Render, providing intuitive guidance and high-level abstractions for running reliable production databases.
• Analyze complex, critical reliability and infrastructure challenges and translate them into clear product strategies that lead to successful launches and stable user experiences.
• Drive alignment between product vision, technical constraints, and business objectives to ensure that data services deliver measurable value to both internal teams and external customers.
• Own the end-to-end product lifecycle for datastores, from initial discovery and requirements gathering through execution, launch, and ongoing optimization based on user feedback and telemetry.
• Communicate intricate technical concepts clearly through presentations and written documentation, ensuring that diverse audiences understand the capabilities and limitations of the platform.
• Monitor industry trends in database technology and AI workloads to identify opportunities for differentiation and innovation within Render's managed Postgres offering.
• Partner with design and engineering to build user-centric experiences that reduce friction and empower developers to focus on their applications rather than infrastructure management.
• Evaluate the impact of new features and improvements through metrics and user feedback, iterating to enhance usability, performance, and reliability over time.
• Act as the primary product interface between the data platform team and key internal or external stakeholders, gathering inputs and articulating trade-offs.
• Ensure that product decisions adhere to security, compliance, and operational standards without compromising the developer experience.

Requirements

• Possess a minimum of 7 years of experience in Product Management, with a significant portion dedicated to databases, data infrastructure, developer tools, or platform products that serve technical audiences.
• Demonstrate a solid understanding of Postgres, including its architecture, operational aspects, ecosystem, and common production challenges faced by organizations in production environments.
• Exhibit strong empathy for developers, both within internal teams and external customers, combined with the technical acumen necessary to make informed architectural trade-offs with engineering partners.
• Show a proven ability to take complex, critical reliability and infrastructure challenges and translate them into clear strategies that result in successful product launches and stable outcomes.
• Maintain excellent communication and presentation skills, allowing you to convey intricate technical information clearly and persuasively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Have a history of working effectively in ambiguous situations, making decisions with incomplete information while still driving progress on critical initiatives.
• Bring a bias for action, balancing speed with thoughtfulness to ensure that product initiatives move forward without compromising quality or reliability.
• Commit to a collaborative work style, partnering closely with cross-functional teams to achieve shared objectives and elevate the overall product offering.

Nice to have

• Prior experience as a database engineer, DBA, or infrastructure engineer providing deep operational insight into real-world database management.
• Hands-on experience with Postgres internals, replication tools, or its extension ecosystem, such as pgvector or PostGIS, to better evaluate technical feasibility and trade-offs.
• Experience building AI agents or the underlying data infrastructure that supports them, aligning with the evolving needs of AI-native application development.

• This position is generally not eligible for new visa sponsorship. Render may sponsor existing visa transfers at its discretion.
