Staff Product Manager, CI/CD & Developer Productivity
Job description
About the role
You own the complete path from commit to running production software on Render, encompassing the build system, the deploy experience, and the foundational primitives that make delivery composable. This includes managing reusable build artifacts, multi-service deployment, deployment pipelines, and infrastructure as code as core system capabilities. You are responsible for the part of our customers' software development lifecycle that Render directly influences, and for the developer productivity outcomes that stem from that ownership. This role operates at a high-leverage point where the simplicity of the developer experience directly determines adoption and retention. You will ensure that the build and deploy journey remains intuitive and powerful, whether the code is written by a human developer or triggered by an AI agent. Success in this position means faster builds, higher deploy success rates, and significantly improved time-to-diagnosis when issues arise. You will work in concert with infrastructure, design, customer success, and go-to-market teams to shape the future of developer workflows on the platform.
Key facts
What you'll do
Define and own the end-to-end build and deploy system, setting the strategic roadmap for speed, reliability, and debuggability.
Own critical developer productivity metrics including build and deploy speed, deploy success rate, and time required to diagnose and resolve failures.
Shape experiences that scale seamlessly from simple hundred-line prototypes to complex architectures comprising hundreds of services.
Build and ship foundational primitives such as reusable build artifacts and application-level deployment, avoiding the accumulation of one-off features.
Drive performance initiatives focused on caching strategies, incremental builds, monorepo workflows, and optimized build compute options for resource-intensive workloads.
Implement failure classification systems that surface root causes at the point of failure, reducing the need to dig through logs and improving debuggability.
Establish metrics and observability to measure and track improvements in debuggability and the overall developer experience over time.
Engage directly with customers to gather feedback, identify patterns across the user base, and make informed decisions on build versus buy or deferment.
Partner with engineering to balance foundational refactors against urgent customer needs, ensuring sustainable progress without compromising critical deliverables.
Collaborate with customer success and sales teams on at-risk accounts to define commitments, determine workable alternatives, and craft clear communication strategies.
Work closely with design partners to ensure that the build and deploy workflows remain intuitive and efficient for both human users and AI-driven agents.
Ensure that deployment pipelines are robust, composable, and capable of handling the complexity of modern multi-service applications.
Leverage infrastructure as code principles to make deployment artifacts reliable, repeatable, and versioned.
Continuously evaluate new build and runtime technologies to assess their applicability and potential integration into the Render platform.
Requirements
You have 6 or more years of product management experience, with significant time spent on developer tools, infrastructure, or platform products.
You have a strong track record of defining and shipping foundational primitives that other products and teams can build upon.
You are comfortable navigating ambiguity and making reasoned decisions with incomplete information in a fast-moving environment.
You communicate clearly and persuasively, both in writing and verbally, to diverse stakeholders including engineers, executives, and customers.
You understand distributed systems concepts well enough to evaluate technical tradeoffs and implications for product decisions.
You have experience working with large-scale systems where performance, reliability, and debuggability are critical constraints.
You demonstrate high integrity, humility, and an insatiable drive to learn, engaging in reasoned discussions and continuous feedback to improve individually and collectively.
You thrive in collaborative settings, fostering mutual trust and engaging in effective debate to achieve the best outcomes for customers and the team.
Nice to have
Experience working with AI agents and understanding how their workflows differ from traditional human-driven development processes.
A background in platforms or infrastructure that require balancing simplicity for users with power for advanced scenarios.
Practical notes
This is a full-time remote position based in the United States.
