Object Storage Product Engineer
Job description
About the role
You will architect and own the roadmap for Render's object storage service, defining the long-term technical strategy in collaboration with product leadership. This role requires you to balance deep system design with pragmatic execution, ensuring the storage platform meets the demands of AI-native applications. You will translate ambiguous product requirements into concrete technical specifications, driving alignment across engineering teams. You will act as the primary technical authority for object storage, responsible for decisions on durability, performance, and scalability. The position demands rigorous analysis of trade-offs in consistency, latency, and cost to build a reliable and competitive infrastructure. You will mentor junior engineers by providing code reviews and technical guidance, fostering a culture of quality and craftsmanship. Success in this role will be measured by your ability to deliver robust features that empower developers and strengthen the Render platform. You will champion best practices in reliability and operational excellence, ensuring the storage service is a trusted foundation for our customers.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Architect the core components of the object storage system, translating high-level requirements into resilient and scalable implementations.
- Lead the design of storage APIs to ensure they are intuitive, consistent, and performant for developers building AI workloads.
- Optimize data durability and availability mechanisms, implementing strategies that safeguard customer data against infrastructure failures.
- Analyze and resolve complex performance bottlenecks across the storage stack, from network throughput to disk I/O constraints.
- Define and enforce operational standards for monitoring, alerting, and logging to maintain high service reliability.
- Partner with product managers to de-risk new features, providing technical estimates and identifying dependencies early in the planning process.
- Collaborate with the design team to ensure the developer experience is seamless, translating user workflows into robust backend services.
- Coordinate with the infrastructure team to manage resource allocation, capacity planning, and cost optimization for storage systems.
- Implement automated testing and validation frameworks to ensure the correctness and stability of storage operations.
- Participate in on-call rotations to respond to production incidents, leading post-mortems and driving improvements.
- Mentor engineers across the codebase, sharing knowledge about distributed storage patterns and best practices.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and tools, assessing their applicability to our object storage roadmap.
- Drive the adoption of infrastructure-as-code practices using tools like Terraform to manage storage resources reliably.
- Ensure compliance with internal security policies and external regulatory requirements for data storage.
Requirements
- Possess at least 6 years of professional software development experience, with a significant portion focused on backend systems.
- Demonstrate extensive experience building and operating key-value datastores at scale, understanding their limitations and strengths.
- Show a proven ability to collaborate effectively with product and design teams, bridging the gap between vision and implementation.
- Exhibit strong ownership, taking initiative to solve problems without constant direction and making sound technical decisions.
- Have a solid familiarity with distributed systems concepts, including consensus, replication, and fault tolerance.
- Bring experience with modern software build and deployment tools, such as CI/CD pipelines and container orchestration.
- Hold a deep understanding of networking protocols and storage systems, including block, file, and object storage.
- Have a history of writing clean, maintainable code that is well-documented and covered by tests.
Nice to have
- Experience working across the full technology stack, from infrastructure provisioning to frontend interactions.
- A broad understanding of web frameworks, APIs, and databases, including relational and NoSQL systems.
- Hands-on experience with Go, Typescript, React, Kubernetes, Postgres, Terraform, or Temporal in production environments.
