Redwood Materials is on the lookout for a Staff Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) team. What you'll do
- Serve as the Mechanical Engineer of Record for projects that involve hazardous environments, clean and dry spaces, and facilities dedicated to chemical processing, ensuring the production of accurate mechanical and plumbing documentation.
- Take charge of the design process for a diverse range of mechanical and plumbing systems, which encompass industrial water systems, HVAC systems for laboratories and industrial environments, as well as process heating and cooling systems, along with various air and water management solutions.
- Assess and critique conceptual designs proposed by junior engineers, pinpointing potential technical and financial issues that may arise during project execution.
- Guarantee that all mechanical engineering deliverables adhere to applicable codes and uphold the highest quality standards throughout the design process.
- Improve project workflows and standards to ensure the delivery of consistent design excellence across all engineering outputs.
- Participate in on-site construction and commissioning activities, acting as the main point of contact for technical questions and providing immediate solutions to any challenges that arise.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop equipment layouts, piping and instrumentation diagrams, isometric drawings, and material takeoffs, ensuring seamless integration of all engineering aspects.
- Be prepared to travel to project sites and attend meetings as necessary to support project objectives.
Requirements
- A Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline is required.
- Must hold a Professional Engineer license with an NCEES record and be eligible to apply for licensure in Nevada and South Carolina.
- A minimum of 7 years of experience in HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection design is essential.
- Comprehensive understanding of International Codes, including Energy Conservation, Mechanical, Plumbing, Fire Protection Codes, NFPA standards, SMACNA duct construction standards, ACGIH Ventilation Practices, and ASHRAE guidelines is required.
- Experience in designing various types of equipment, including heat rejection systems, chillers, boilers, air handling units, and pumps is preferred.
- Familiarity with abatement systems, heat exchangers, control valves, and heat recovery systems is advantageous.
- Ability to write operational sequences for HVAC and chilled water systems is necessary.
- Proficient in specifying ductwork and piping materials for different systems.
- Experience in creating or modifying construction specifications for mechanical and plumbing systems is required.
- Proficient in Revit and AutoCAD, with a background in sourcing and specifying mechanical equipment and managing Request for Proposal (RFP) processes.
- A strong foundation in engineering software, including Pipe-Flo, Caesar II, AspenTech applications, Carrier HAP, Trane Trace, Navisworks, and Bluebeam is essential.
Nice to have
- Experience with advanced modeling tools and techniques in mechanical design would be beneficial.
Skills & tools
- Proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD is a must.
- Familiarity with engineering software packages such as Pipe-Flo, Caesar II, and others mentioned above is important for success in this role.

In accordance with California's pay transparency regulations, the salary range for this position is set between $187,500 and $247,500 USD. Actual compensation may differ based on various factors, including the candidate's experience, educational background, and skill set.
