About the role
At Redwood Materials, we are dedicated to building a sustainable battery supply chain that prioritizes the recovery, reuse, and recycling of battery materials. Founded in 2017, our goal is to deliver cost-effective, large-scale energy storage solutions while producing battery materials domestically from existing batteries. We are seeking a Staff Electrical Design Engineer to join our Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) team, where you will play a crucial role in advancing our mission.

What you'll do
- Design and oversee the implementation of various electrical systems, including medium voltage feeds (up to 34.5 kV), low voltage power distribution, lighting, raceway systems, grounding, and communication networks.
- Serve as the Electrical Engineer of Record, responsible for creating permit and construction documentation.
- Execute power system studies, including short-circuit analysis, arc flash calculations, and protective device coordination, utilizing tools such as SKM or ETAP to ensure adherence to safety and regulatory standards.
- Perform cable ampacity calculations with software like AmpCalc to optimize cable sizing beyond conventional NEC guidelines.
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, including architectural, civil, structural, mechanical, and fire safety engineers, to produce comprehensive Issue for Construction (IFC) packages.
- Assess conceptual designs from manufacturing engineers and stakeholders to pinpoint potential technical and financial risks, while preparing electrical specifications and conducting technical evaluations of bids from external consultants.
- Conduct code compliance analysis for NEC, IECC, and applicable NFPA standards across all project outputs, ensuring all deliverables meet regulatory requirements.
- Provide support during construction administration, including responding to Requests for Information (RFIs), reviewing submittals, managing change orders, and performing on-site inspections. Act as the technical liaison throughout the construction and commissioning phases.
- Develop engineering cost estimates and project timelines, perform quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) reviews of electrical designs, and mentor junior engineers while contributing to the establishment of internal design standards and best practices.
Requirements
- A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution is required.
- Must be a licensed Professional Engineer in Nevada or eligible for reciprocity; candidates must obtain their PE in Nevada and South Carolina within two months of employment.
- A minimum of 10 years of experience in the heavy commercial and industrial sectors, showcasing advanced expertise in electrical engineering.
- In-depth knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC), International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), and relevant NFPA standards, with a proven history of leading code analysis and applying these requirements to complex, multidisciplinary projects.
- High proficiency in design software such as Revit MEP, AutoCAD, Navisworks, Bluebeam, and SKM or ETAP for design production, clash detection, document review, and power system studies.
- Advanced skills in AmpCalc or similar tools for cable ampacity calculations, as well as the ability to conduct photometric studies using lighting design software like Visual or AGI.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously, prioritizing tasks effectively, and delivering high-quality engineering documentation on schedule.
- Willingness to travel to project sites for construction administration, commissioning support, and field issue resolution, with a flexible schedule to accommodate project demands.
- Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to collaborate across various disciplines and engage confidently with stakeholders at all levels.
