Redwood Materials is seeking a Substation Protection and Control Engineer to become an integral part of our Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) team. This role is crucial in the design and implementation of high voltage electrical systems that support our mission to foster a sustainable circular economy for lithium-ion batteries. What you'll do
- Lead the design process for high voltage AC electrical systems in industrial substations, with voltage levels ranging from 69kV to 345kV, ensuring seamless integration with transmission lines and medium voltage distribution networks.
- Evaluate current substation designs and propose enhancements to improve their reliability and operational stability.
- Develop comprehensive single-line diagrams, physical layouts, protection and control systems, relay designs, and grounding strategies for substations.
- Perform grid simulations and stability assessments utilizing software tools such as PSSE, PSLF, PSCAD, and ASPEN OneLiner.
- Collaborate with utilities and Independent System Operators/Regional Transmission Organizations (ISO/RTOs) to support interconnection studies, permitting processes, and compliance for new renewable energy and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects.
- Conduct critical studies, including short circuit analysis, load flow calculations, and arc flash assessments.
- Create relay settings using SEL AcSELerator or comparable software tools.
- Select and assess high voltage equipment such as switchgear, circuit breakers, transformers, and protection relays for optimal performance.
- Serve as the Electrical Engineer of Record for designated projects, ensuring adherence to industry standards and regulations.
- Carry out code compliance evaluations and provide technical assistance to internal teams as needed.
- Collaborate with civil and structural engineering teams on substation layout and site development initiatives.
- Support construction and commissioning teams with field engineering tasks and troubleshooting efforts.
- Review vendor submissions and shop drawings to ensure technical accuracy and compliance with project specifications.
- Engage in technical bid evaluations to identify potential scope gaps and ensure project alignment.
- Lead research and development efforts to explore the feasibility of medium voltage DC distribution systems for integrating BESS with other energy sources.
- Independently manage high voltage design packages from initial concept through to final commissioning.
- Coordinate with internal stakeholders and external consultants to maintain alignment on project scope, timelines, and budgets.
- Prepare engineering cost estimates and execution schedules in collaboration with project control teams.
- Facilitate technical review meetings and design optimization workshops.
- Mentor junior engineers and actively contribute to the professional development of the team.
- Develop workflows, templates, and standards for high voltage design and simulation processes.
- Support strategic initiatives focused on grid integration, renewable energy solutions, and energy storage advancements.
Requirements
- A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.
- A Professional Engineer (PE) license in Nevada or eligibility for reciprocity; candidates must obtain their PE in Nevada and South Carolina within two months of employment.
- A minimum of 10 years of experience in high voltage electrical design, preferably within an EPC environment.
- Expertise in transmission-level load flow and stability analysis using PSSE and PSLF software.
- Proficiency in electromagnetic transient simulations with PSCAD or similar applications.
- Experience in developing SEL Relay Settings using SEL AcSELerator or equivalent tools.
- Familiarity with relay coordination and fault studies using ASPEN OneLiner or similar software.
- Knowledge of power system modeling tools such as ETAP or SKM.
- Competency in using AutoCAD, Navisworks, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office Suite.
Nice to have
- Experience in the design of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) systems and converter stations.
- A solid understanding of protection and control systems, SCADA, and substation automation technologies.
- Field experience in the construction and commissioning of high voltage electrical systems is highly valued.
