Engineering Manager
Job description
About the role
The Points Guy is actively reshaping its identity, transitioning from a media-centric model to a consumer product company focused on direct user impact. For over fifteen years, the brand empowered millions to understand points, miles, and travel, but the current mission is to build the intelligent products that deliver this value automatically. The engineering challenges ahead center on driving user engagement, fueling sustainable growth, and maximizing active user retention rather than passive page views. This role owns the full lifecycle of product delivery within a fast-moving consumer environment, ensuring that business objectives are translated into actionable and realistic engineering plans. The hire will be responsible for establishing a high-performing culture that leverages AI-assisted development as a core productivity tool, not an experimental side project. Success will be measured by the team's ability to ship reliable features that enhance engagement and maintain a robust, scalable technical foundation. This position requires a leader who can act as a strategic partner to product and design, making informed trade-off decisions that protect the engineering bar.
Key facts
What you'll do
Define and own the day-to-day execution and delivery strategy for your engineering team, converting ambiguous product goals into clear, sequenced technical work.
Build and lead a high-functioning team of 5-8 engineers, strategically aligning junior and senior talent to the most critical priorities and individual growth trajectories.
Own the end-to-end performance management cycle, conducting regular feedback sessions, annual reviews, and career development conversations that drive tangible professional advancement.
Champion process improvements that elevate your team's velocity, estimation accuracy, and overall code quality while enforcing the engineering standards daily.
Serve as the primary liaison between your engineering squad and product, design, and business stakeholders, owning the scoping of risks and trade-offs before work commences.
Collaborate closely with other Engineering Managers and the Principal Engineer to ensure technical direction remains coherent, scalable, and aligned across the entire portfolio of products.
Champion the integration and daily use of AI-assisted development tools within your team's workflow, embedding them into the standard operating procedure for how work is completed.
Foster a psychologically safe environment where engineers feel empowered to speak the truth about obstacles and failures, enabling rapid iteration and accountability.
Requirements
You must possess prior experience leading a team of engineers through full delivery cycles, ideally within the context of consumer-facing digital products at meaningful scale.
A proven track record of developing people is essential, demonstrated by clear instances where engineers you managed achieved promotions and significant skill improvements.
You must maintain hands-on technical credibility, allowing you to dive deeply into design reviews and technical conversations without needing to write every line of code yourself.
You must be comfortable owning outcomes and remaining fully accountable for your team's delivery and morale, even when requirements and priorities shift unexpectedly under pressure.
You must possess sufficient technical judgment to evaluate complex trade-offs and coach engineers through difficult architectural and implementation decisions.
You must exhibit a bias toward direct, specific feedback, replacing vague encouragement with actionable guidance and ensuring that necessary changes are implemented effectively.
You must be willing to utilize AI tools as a force multiplier for your team's daily work, integrating them into the standard development process rather than treating them as a novelty.
You must thrive in a fast-paced, growth-oriented environment where the ability to adapt quickly and manage ambiguity is a core requirement of the role.
Nice to have
Experience working with points, miles, or travel-related loyalty programs is a distinct advantage given the business context.
Familiarity with AI-native product development methodologies and previous exposure to AI tooling in production engineering environments.
