Quality Inspector - Weekday Nights

About the role

You will verify that all parts in each order match the customer blueprint and specifications before they proceed to the next stage. You will use precision measuring tools and inspection techniques to detect any deviations from the required standards. You will document every inspection result accurately in the internal quality management system. You will work closely with production team members to identify and flag any irregularities in the manufacturing process. You will help maintain a safe and organized workspace by following all safety and housekeeping protocols during your shift. You will communicate clearly with your team to resolve any quality concerns quickly and effectively. You will support the continuous improvement of inspection procedures to reduce errors and enhance efficiency. You will represent Proto Labs commitment to quality by ensuring that only correct parts are released for shipment.

What you'll do

Perform detailed visual and dimensional inspections of machined parts using calipers, micrometers, and height gages.

Verify that all components meet customer print requirements, specifications, and quality standards before release.

Inspect first article samples and conduct periodic checks throughout the production run to catch defects early.

Use precision measurement tools to check dimensions, surface finish, and hole locations with high accuracy.

Record inspection data in the company database, ensuring that entries are complete, accurate, and timely.

Sort approved parts and quarantine nonconforming material for further review and disposition.

Collaborate with machine operators to address root causes of defects and implement corrective actions quickly.

Support the team in conducting internal audits and maintaining compliance with quality management procedures.

Follow all safety rules and use personal protective equipment to maintain a secure work environment at all times.

Label and organize inspected parts so that they move smoothly through the workflow to the next process.

Assist in troubleshooting recurring issues by analyzing trends in rejects and communicating findings to the production team.

Maintain a clean and orderly workstation to support efficiency, safety, and compliance with company standards.

Adhere to all company policies, including attendance, confidentiality, and quality procedures.

Participate in continuous improvement initiatives aimed at reducing waste and improving inspection accuracy.

Demonstrate strong problem solving skills when identifying defects and proposing practical solutions.

Requirements

Must be at least 18 years of age and able to perform the essential functions of the role with or without reasonable accommodation.

Must have the right to work and employment eligibility in the United States, and you are not currently suspended or excluded from any U.S. federal government program.

Must pass a background check and drug screening as part of the hiring process.

A high school diploma or GED is required; additional technical education or training is preferred.

Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English to understand instructions and document results.

Ability to stand or walk for extended periods and to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally during your shift.

Ability to use hand tools, measuring instruments, and personal protective equipment safely and correctly.

Must be able to follow detailed procedures, work from prints and specifications, and maintain attention to detail.

Nice to have

Previous experience in a manufacturing or quality inspection role within a machine shop or production environment.

Familiarity with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) and interpreting engineering drawings.

Experience with statistical process control concepts and data tracking in a manufacturing setting.

Basic knowledge of CNC machining processes and common machine shop terminology.

History of using calipers, micrometers, height gages, and other precision measuring tools.

Practical notes

This role is scheduled for the Weekday Nights shift, running from 5 PM to 3 AM, Monday through Thursday. Consistent attendance during these scheduled hours is essential for workflow and team coordination. The position is based in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, and requires on site presence at the facility. There may be requirements for extended shifts or overtime during peak production periods. Employment is at will, and both the employee and the company may terminate the relationship at any time. Relocation or remote work options are not available for this position.
