Staff Software Engineer, Patient Experience
Job description
Staff Software Engineer, Patient Experience at Pomelo Care.
About the role
You will serve as the technical lead for how patients interact with Pomelo from the moment they enroll through their entire care journey. The role demands that you ensure patients remain highly engaged in their care and trust the team you help build. Earlier intervention is a core belief because it increases the likelihood of affecting meaningful health outcomes for mothers and babies. This position is centered on designing the patient experience that checks in with users throughout their journey and guides them to the best next step for their care. You will triage urgent needs, simplify access to high quality care, and help patients feel supported during critical life moments. This role sits at the center of that mission and requires ownership of both the strategic vision and the execution of patient-facing systems. You will operate in the continental US time zone and report to a Senior Staff Engineering Manager.
Key facts
What you'll do
Lead the technical direction for our mobile development strategy and patient-facing apps, shaping how tens of thousands of patients experience Pomelo.
Rapidly prototype and ship features in our patient mobile and web apps alongside design and product, using AI tools to move fast and test ideas that meaningfully improve engagement and retention.
Help steer product direction for how we support and retain patients in their critical first month with Pomelo, when the window to affect outcomes is widest.
Talk directly to patients and partner with product, design, and clinical teams to turn real needs into real features that drive measurable improvements in patient behavior.
Mentor and grow junior engineers, raising the bar for the whole team through code reviews, feedback, and technical coaching.
Set the technical standards, architecture patterns, and development practices that our patient-facing products are built on to ensure long-term scalability and reliability.
Explore how do we get patients proactively engaged in their own care through data, experiments, and iterative improvements to the patient journey.
Define how we personalize the patient experience to specific needs and interests while meaningfully moving outcomes using analytics and user feedback.
Investigate how we build habits so that patients check in with us first when problems come up during their pregnancy by designing touchpoints that reinforce trust.
Determine how we keep patients engaged without always requiring direct clinical intervention by automating communication and timely prompts.
Champion the adoption of Expo, React Native, React, TypeScript, Kotlin, and SQL to maintain a cohesive and modern tech stack across products.
Champion the use of LLM coding agents to multiply engineering impact by integrating emerging tools into development workflows responsibly.
Collaborate with clinical stakeholders to ensure that patient-facing features align with medical best practices and compliance requirements.
Own end to end feature delivery from discovery through launch, including metrics definition, experimentation, and post-launch iteration.
Requirements
You have deep experience building and shipping consumer or patient-facing products, whether mobile, web, or both, with a track record of delivering high quality user experiences.
You have served as a technical lead on a team, setting architecture direction and mentoring other engineers to help them grow their skills and impact.
You have strong opinions, loosely held, about how to build great user experiences and you are willing to revisit them when new evidence emerges.
You are comfortable working across the full stack and moving quickly in a startup environment where priorities can shift based on patient needs and data.
You are keeping up with trends in LLM coding agents to multiply your engineering impact and you understand the risks and limitations of these tools.
You enjoy collaborating closely with product and design, not just executing on specs, and you proactively bring ideas to the table.
You have experience with React Native or cross-platform mobile frameworks and you understand the tradeoffs involved in building performant, maintainable mobile experiences.
You have experience building products in healthcare, wellness, or other high-trust consumer domains where privacy, security, and compliance are non negotiable.
You have worked on engagement, retention, or onboarding flows and you understand what makes users stick around and how to measure long term value.
You have prior experience with AI/ML or building agent based systems and you can explain how these techniques can improve patient interactions without overpromising.
You have prior experience with Expo, React, TypeScript, Kotlin, and SQL, and you write clean, testable code that others can easily extend.
You are located in the continental US and can work during hours that overlap with US time zones to support patients and clinical teams.
You are eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship for this role, and you understand that visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
