Applied AI Engineer, Agent Enablement
Job description
About the role
The Agent Enablement AI Deployment Engineering (ADE) team operates at the intersection of engineering, product, design, partnerships, and strategic customers to cultivate an open ecosystem where agent-enabled sites and services can flourish. We are actively shaping the standards and primitives that allow partners to safely connect ChatGPT and Codex to the tools, services, and workflows that already power their businesses. This role is centered on enabling seamless agent access, defining marketplace offerings, and ensuring that user intent reliably translates into task completion. You will work directly with external partners to define the guardrails and primitives necessary for trustworthy agent deployments. The position demands fluency in both high-level product strategy and low-level implementation details across the entire stack. You will be a hands-on engineer who writes code, validates architectures, and owns the technical success of integrations from launch through sustained operation.
Key facts
What you'll do
You will own the complete technical partner journey for priority agent enablement integrations, guiding them from initial use-case selection and readiness assessment through architecture design, prototyping, implementation, rigorous evaluation, controlled rollout, and ongoing maintenance. You will help partners determine the most suitable integration path, whether that involves browser-based sign-in, connector-initiated OAuth flows, or deep agentic account linking and provisioning, always ensuring clear user journeys and safe fallback mechanisms. A core responsibility involves writing production-grade code, building robust sample implementations, creating comprehensive test harnesses, and authoring detailed technical guidance, integration checklists, and debugging tools to move partners efficiently from initial concept to a stable production system. You will debug intricate identity and agent workflows across the entire stack, analyzing user interface state, browser redirect chains, PKCE and OIDC transactions, token exchange and validation logic, account mapping strategies, connector callbacks, CLI or MCP handoffs, and critical operational signals such as latency, retries, rate limits, logs, traces, and metrics. You will conduct thorough reviews of partner architectures and implementation plans, evaluating API contracts, required scopes and permissions, consent flows, terms acceptance, account policy compliance, secret handling procedures, data boundaries, privacy guarantees, reliability strategies, and long-term maintainability. You will run hands-on evaluations, perform extensive dogfooding, lead launch-readiness reviews, manage staged rollouts, and conduct post-launch investigations, translating findings into concrete fixes that prevent recurring issues rather than relying on one-off workarounds. The role requires contributing targeted improvements to ChatGPT, Codex, and the broader Agent Enablement platform, including enhancements to identity protocols, APIs, SDKs, documentation, example code, internal tooling, partner-debugging workflows, launch guardrails, and user-facing consent or control experiences. You will collaborate closely with product, engineering, design, partnerships, legal, policy, security, support, and go-to-market teams to ensure every partner launch proceeds smoothly, safely, and in a repeatable manner. You will synthesize structured signals from partner interactions back into product and engineering, transforming recurring integration patterns into formal platform requirements, reference architectures, playbooks, and actionable developer guidance. Ultimately, you will act as a technical leader who balances product judgment, project management, and deep coding expertise to reduce friction for partners building agent-enabled experiences.
You'll thrive in this role if you
You possess 4-6 years of professional software engineering or AI engineering experience, demonstrating the technical depth required to contribute to platform-level work while still remaining hands-on with code implementation. You have operated in customer or partner-facing roles, successfully scoping projects, building minimum viable products, and articulating trade-offs in solution design and architecture to align with user value drivers. You have built and operated production full-stack products, APIs, backend services, developer platforms, connectors, or integrations, allowing you to reason effectively across frontend user interactions, backend logic, and infrastructure constraints. You understand authentication and authorization at scale, including OAuth, OIDC, PKCE, token lifecycle management, and secure secret handling within distributed systems. You are experienced with debugging complex distributed workflows that span web interfaces, redirects, backend services, and third-party integrations while maintaining reliability and performance. You communicate clearly with both technical and executive audiences, translating ambiguous requirements into structured implementation plans and decision rationales. You are comfortable working within enterprise constraints, accounting for varying account states, permission models, and regulatory considerations when designing agent-enabled experiences. You are passionate about reliability, safety, and developer experience, and you care deeply about delivering integrations that are trustworthy and easy to maintain.
Nice to have
Experience contributing to open source projects or platforms that involve authentication, identity, or API integrations is strongly preferred. Familiarity with agent frameworks, tool-calling patterns, and emerging standards for agent interoperability is considered a significant advantage. Background working in regulated environments or with enterprise sales motions that involve legal and policy review is valued. Experience with monitoring, observability, and structured logging in production distributed systems is preferred.
Practical notes
This role is based in our San Francisco office. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.
