Applied AI Engineer, Messenger Integrations
Job description
About the role
The Applied Deployment Engineer will act as a critical bridge between OpenAI's core platform and the diverse ecosystem of third-party messaging applications. You will own the end-to-end deployment and technical success of ChatGPT integrations within partner messaging products, ensuring that features ship reliably and meet user expectations. This role requires you to deeply understand both partner product contexts and OpenAI's platform constraints so you can translate requirements into robust technical implementations. You will be responsible for designing integration patterns that balance rich functionality with performance, privacy, and reliability across global deployments. A significant portion of your work will involve direct collaboration with external engineering and product teams to resolve complex technical challenges in real time. You will also play a key role in shaping the long-term roadmap for messaging integrations by capturing insights and translating them into reusable strategies. Ultimately, your contributions will determine how seamless and trustworthy the AI experience feels within the contexts where users already communicate every day.
Key facts
What you'll do
Partner with messenger app product and engineering teams to design ChatGPT-powered experiences that fit naturally into chat, group, contact, and app-tab surfaces.
Deepen existing partner integrations, with an initial focus on improving user experience, retention, reliability, and feature set.
Build prototypes, integration guides, reference flows, and launch checklists that help partners move from concept to production efficiently.
Debug API, latency, authentication, quota, quality, and user-experience issues across partner and OpenAI systems using structured investigation methods.
Translate privacy, trust, login, and data-handling requirements into clear technical constraints and implementation plans aligned with OpenAI policies.
Work with product, engineering, design, partnerships, legal, policy, and support teams to make partner launches reliable, scalable, and maintainable.
Capture repeatable patterns from messenger integrations and turn them into reusable playbooks for future ecosystem partners to accelerate onboarding.
Travel periodically to meet with international partners during key integration, launch, and post-launch milestones to strengthen collaboration.
Evaluate integration success metrics, surface learnings to internal stakeholders, and propose data-informed improvements to the partner experience.
Contribute to the development of tools, SDKs, and documentation that reduce friction for partners building with OpenAI's platform.
Identify edge cases in messaging environments and drive technical solutions that preserve performance, security, and clarity of user intent.
Support incident response and on-call responsibilities to ensure timely resolution of production issues affecting live integrations.
Collaborate closely with safety and policy teams to ensure integrations adhere to responsible AI usage guidelines within conversational interfaces.
Represent OpenAI in external technical discussions, providing clear and accurate explanations of platform capabilities and limitations to partners.
Requirements
Must have a strong software engineering background with hands-on experience building and deploying integrations to external platforms.
Must be comfortable writing code on a daily basis and capable of making changes across platform or monorepo surfaces as integration needs evolve.
Must have experience reasoning simultaneously across client, backend, authentication, privacy, reliability, and user experience constraints.
Must demonstrate strong product sense and design judgment, particularly for consumer-facing and communication-sensitive experiences.
Must be able to translate ambiguous product ideas into concrete implementation plans without over-specifying partner-specific internals prematurely.
Must communicate effectively with engineers, product leaders, executives, and business stakeholders using precise and structured language.
Must be comfortable debugging distributed systems and narrowing broad performance or reliability issues into actionable hypotheses.
Must care deeply about user trust, privacy, and product quality, especially in communication surfaces where context is sensitive and expectations are high.
Must be able to balance urgency with sound judgment, keeping launches moving while ensuring that critical details are not overlooked.
Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship for this position, and relocation assistance is available for eligible candidates.
Nice to have
Experience working on B2C consumer, social, or messaging products that involve real-time communication flows.
Experience working with international partners or within cross-cultural product and engineering environments.
Familiarity with OAuth/login flows, API rate limits, webviews, mobile release cycles, and partner launch operations.
Prior experience with AI product launches, developer platforms, or API-first products that involve multi-party integrations.
Previous customer-facing or partner-facing engineering experience, especially in startup or smaller-company environments where ownership is broad.
Ability to collaborate across APAC time zones and travel internationally approximately quarterly, sometimes for up to two weeks around major launch milestones.
Practical notes
This role is based in our San Francisco office and follows a hybrid work model requiring 3 days in the office per week.
Relocation assistance is available to new employees who are eligible under our current policies.
Travel is required periodically to meet with key international partners during integration, launch, and post-launch phases.
Candidates must meet all requirements without sponsorship for this position.
